Job Description

The University of Hawaii System Office is seeking a CRL Project Associate for the Coral Resilience Lab. This role involves assisting with research and administrative tasks, managing lab supplies, conducting coral husbandry and restoration research, coordinating educational events, and supporting curriculum development. Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and relevant experience in marine science and education. The position is based in Hawaii and is not remote.
About the position

The Coral Resilience Lab (CRL) is committed to supporting diversity, equity and inclusion in science. We believe an inclusive workplace supports better research and encourage all to apply. Assists with research and administrative responsibilities on behalf of the CRL. Manages procurement, scheduling, organizing, tracking, receiving, and stocking supplies with moderate supervision. Maintains lab supplies and equipment. Assists with coral husbandry, reproduction and restoration research. Contributes to coral biology experiments including experimental setup, maintenance, data collection and curation. Assists the CRL Project Manager with logistics for community partnerships and outreach. Coordinates education events and communicates effectively, both online and in person, with diverse audiences that have varying educational levels and cultural backgrounds. Assists with curriculum development, which includes planning and writing lessons for coral-related activities, aligning lessons to current Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and gathering materials needed for lessons. Assists with field work.

Responsibilities

• Assist with curriculum development for coral-related activities.

• Assist with field work.

Requirements
• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year university in Biology, Ecology, Marine Biology or a related field.
,
• Three to five (3-5) years of experience in the development and delivery of experiential programming for students grades K-8.
,
• One to three (1-3) years of experience in the development and delivery of marine science inquiry curriculum and interactive labs.
,
• One to three (1-3) years field and lab experience including invasive species removal, native outplanting, and coral spawning.
,
• One to three (1-3) years of experience with aquarium maintenance and aquatic animal care.
,
• Working knowledge of coral reef biology and ecology, with a focus on reproductive biology and climate change.
,
• Working understanding of experimental design.
,
• Basic understanding of institutional administrative, fiscal, and HR policies.
,
• Proficient in formal and informal teaching and communications.
,
• Familiarity with scientific writing and communication.

Nice-to-haves
• Functional knowledge of UH, RCUH, and UH Foundation fiscal systems, policies and procedures.

• Proficiency in Adobe.
,
• Experience with aquarium control hardware and software.
,
• Experience with inclusive science initiatives.
,
• Experience with activities that link Native Hawaiian culture and science.

• Volunteer experience with local organizations.

• Ability to crew a 45-foot education and research vessel.

• Experience on small boats.

• Experience with PCR.
,
• Prior training with University of Hawai‘i Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) programs.

• Experience with coral restoration.

• Experience with science communications and outreach.

• Experience in conservation, stewardship, and resource management projects.

• Experience with curriculum development.
