COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE

Area 3 exists to perform wildlife management, education, law enforcement and public service duties in the six northeastern counties of the state. In the geographic area, the work unit manages State Wildlife Areas to provide quality wildlife habitat, and wildlife recreational opportunities. District Wildlife Managers, Wildlife Technicians, Biologists, Customer Service Representatives and Administrative Assistants work to provide these services to the public.
Description of Job
This position exists to manage wildlife, protect and enhance wildlife habitat, perform property maintenance, provide public wildlife recreation access, public safety, law enforcement, and public service particularly on State Wildlife Areas located in Area 3.
LAW ENFORCEMENT
Law Enforcement by cooperation/communication with city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Protect people and natural resources by deterring, apprehending, and prosecuting violators through patrol, and investigation, citation issuance, check stations and public education. Enforce State and Federal laws and regulations with an emphasis on wildlife law enforcement. Compliance is gained by patrolling, investigations, license inspections, issuance of citations, case preparation and testifying in court, apprehending and arresting violators, assisting with check stations, special operations and providing education on laws and regulations. May be called to assist other law enforcement agencies in situations dealing with public health and safety and officer safety situations. Includes maintaining certification and proficiency with pistol, shotgun and rifle, arrest control and defensive tactics, and all mandatory annual law enforcement training and updates.
PROPERTY MANAGEMENT
Assists in developing and implementing habitat improvements, five year maintenance, and legal compliance plans by assessing SWA’s deficiencies. Assists in determining project priority in accordance with the Long Range Plan and the regional and area work plans, referring to professional journals and research literature and consulting other wildlife professionals on specific project needs. Assists in administering all agricultural leases on state wildlife areas.
The position administers water and CPW water rights as needed following legal use of water guidelines and requirements.
This position is responsible for working cooperatively with District Wildlife Managers and biologists to identify and implement habitat improvement projects and a wide variety of other wildlife related responsibilities. This position is responsible for the routine maintenance of state wildlife areas, including irrigation, wetland management, noxious weed control and mitigation, and grazing management. This position will also develop and implement operation plans, budgets, work plans and master management plans for the SWA tracts in its purview and works independently to achieve the goals and objectives in these and in CPW’s guiding documents.
MAINTENANCE
The position is responsible for maintenance of state facilities, tools, machinery, and equipment. Develop and maintain property facilities to include fencing, signing, parking lot and access points, bridges, roads, toilets, water manipulation devices, and buildings. Use and maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment to include heavy equipment, farm machinery, welders, and large power tools. Work with Area staff to maintain the compound including the yard, equipment and buildings. Works with engineers and AWM to assess, describe, and prioritize capital and equipment needs for properties.
ADMINISTRATION
Maintain all pertinent informational records and property files; maintain tool, equipment and capital equipment inventory. Updates and maintains certification skills through attending conferences and training. Acquires goods and services while following appropriate purchasing and fiscal procedures. Process temporary personnel hiring and employment documents. Maintains technical knowledge and qualification in chemical application for weeds. Administers agricultural leases on State Wildlife Areas.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Provide customer service for users of the State Wildlife Areas. Talk to users about regulations and answer questions. Occasionally will provide support to the Area 3 office with customer service at the Brush Service Center.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications
At least four (4) years of work experience in wildlife management, conservation biology, ecology, wildlife biology, natural resource management, farming or agriculture or an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. You must adequately demonstrate your experience in your application as it relates to the duties of this position. No formal college education is required.
Substitutions
Appropriate education in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Biology, Aquatic Biology/Fishery Science/Aquaculture/Fishery Management, Ecology, Environmental Science, Outdoor Recreation, any science related degree or a related field of study will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Conditions of Employment
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license if operating a State vehicle
• Position will be required to occasionally work inconsistent hours including weekends and some holidays primarily for law enforcement
• If the employee does not have a CDL they must be willing and able to obtain one
• Criminal and driving background check required
• Exposure to combustible fuels, herbicides etc.
• Occasional travel and overnight stays are required primarily for trainings
• Applicant must pass physical, psychological screening, drug test, background check and POST certification training to obtain a Wildlife Officer commission
• Experience with various tools, OHV, farm equipment, machinery, welders, etc.
• Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify their application from the current position
