Toronto Metropolitan University is seeking a Contract Lecturer for the course ASC 855/AR 8220: Sustainable Rating Systems for Fall 2025. This part-time position involves in-person teaching, focusing on evaluating environmental impacts of built environments and various sustainable building rating systems. Applicants should have a relevant degree in architecture or building science and familiarity with sustainable ratings in Canada is preferred.

Toronto Metropolitan University is reshaping the downtown core of Toronto with three new buildings: the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens, the TMU Image Centre in the heart of campus, and a Student Learning Centre on Yonge Street. In addition, currently in progress is the development of a new multipurpose building, the Church Street development (CSD). This new building will be located just north of Dundas on Church Street and will be home to four academic health services programs, TMU food services, administration, and a student residence. Appointment Details Course Information The course will critically evaluate current and emerging practices in the assessment of environmental impacts of built environments. Students will investigate different approaches to the assessment and rating of sustainable buildings, how these are reflected in various rating systems such as LEED, Living Building Challenge, Green Globes, Passive House, and new initiatives as they transpire. The course addresses rating systems as tools for analysis, and critically examines how they inform the design process. Course: ASC 855/AR 8220: Sustainable Rating Systems Semester/Term: Fall 2025 Hours/Section: 3 hours Estimated Number of Students: 30 students A part-time hourly appointment/ one semester is for less than 9 hours in any one semester. Course delivery in Fall 2025 will be in-person. Candidates hired for in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching on campus. Qualifications Evidence may be requested for all categories. Education Applicants must possess an accredited professional degree in architecture or building science, or an advanced degree related to building design, with specialization in sustainable building design. The applicant should demonstrate the relevance of their educational background to the subject matter of this course. Familiarity with current sustainable ratings systems initiatives and trends in Canada is preferred and and a LEED AP credential is preferred Applicants with an advanced degree related to sustainable building design may be given preference. Applicants with degrees in other areas related to the built environment may also be considered if they have considerable relevant professional experience. Experience Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of sustainable design with at least 5 year's experience working in industry on sustainable building design projects. OAA registration is preferred. Applicants must have experience in teaching within an accredited program in architecture. Note: Applicants without the experience in sustainable practice identified above but possessing a significant record of research, publication and dissemination relevant to sustainable design may be considered for this post. Currency Applicants must demonstrate current understanding of the architectural field and the particular issues related to this course through professional practice, university teaching, research, publications, and/or participation in relevant conferences (within the past five years). Current DAS CUPE 1 Lecturers are expected to provide an updated currency report to be considered for contract lecturer positions as per article 17.(h) of the collective agreement. Teaching Skills Applicants should have demonstrated experience in teaching in an Architecture/Architectural Science or related program within the past five years. Applicants must have demonstrated ability to teach effectively within a lecture format and in small group situations in a University environment to undergraduate students. Applicants must have the ability to guide students and provide counsel as required in order to meet educational/pedagogical goals. Applicants should demonstrate commitment to inclusive teaching and awareness of EDI priorities, including but not limited to demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and incorporating course materials and/or guest lecturers to provide different knowledge, perspectives, lived experiences and worldviews. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of personal computers that are relevant to this course, including document creation, file management, internet research, and communications. Applicants without teaching experience, but with an exceptional record of practice may be considered for this posting. Interactive Skills Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with colleagues and students; ability to work effectively in groups; ability to resolve conflicts constructively; ability to carry out the duties and obligations of an Instructor in a respectful manner; ability to empathize with others and consider varied perspectives; commitment to on-going self-assessment; effectively facilitate respectful classroom discussions addressing diverse student identities, perspectives and experiences. Evidence may be requested for all categories. Other Requirements Applicants are to submit samples of teaching work and/or design/creative/professional work or other documents that demonstrate work they have undertaken in the area of renewable energy systems in buildings.
