Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Senior Project Conservator, the Conservator is responsible for carrying out conservation work on monumental stone artifacts selected for exhibition in the new Ancient Egypt and Nubia Galleries. This work will primarily (80%) be carried out in the Museum's off-site Conservation Lab Annex (CLA), located approximately 50 minutes from the main Museum facility. Primary duties include researching conservation materials and techniques, planning and developing conservation treatments, carrying out conservation treatment, keeping written, photographic, and electronic records of work; working with mountmakers and structural engineers to design support armatures, and keeping current with developments in the field through readings, conferences, online discussions, and personal contacts. The successful candidate must be available to work at the off-site location, which is not accessible by public transit. This is an ongoing position with renewal subject to the availability of funding.

Job Responsibilities
• Planning, developing, and carrying out conservation treatment for monumental objects for the AEN Galleries Project.
• Keeping written, photographic, and electronic records of all work.
• Supervise technicians and interns working at CLA.
• Working with exhibit designers, engineers, and mountmakers to design support armatures and exhibit approaches.
• Keeping current with developments in the field through readings, conferences, online discussions, and personal contacts.
• Participate in departmental planning and initiatives, including teaching, strategic planning, and outreach activities.
Qualifications
• Graduate of a recognized Masters-level conservation training program with two to three years of professional experience, preferably in a similar institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
• Sound work habits, personal initiative, and organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to undertake moderate to heavy lifting are essential.
• Experience on large stone architectural pieces and using rigging equipment is preferred.
• Candidate will uphold collegial and collaborative working relationships with conservation staff and other departments.
• Candidate should be comfortable with social media outreach and with regular interaction with the public on both a casual and a more formal basis.
• Must be able to work in the offsite CLA location, located in central New Jersey.
