Job Description
The Boone County Conservation District is hiring a Conservation Technician in Burlington, KY. The role involves assisting with conservation programs, education, outreach, habitat management, and fieldwork related to forest and watershed health. Duties include planning community events, managing invasive species, conducting wildlife surveys, and administrative tasks. This part-time, contract position pays $20 per hour for approximately 20 hours per week, requiring in-person work.
Background:
In Kentucky, there are 121 Conservation Districts working towards the same goal: conserving our natural resources. The Boone County Conservation District (BCCDKY) is the primary entity to provide technical, educational, and financial assistance to private landowners and land users in the conservation, sustainment, improvement, and enhancement of Boone County’s natural resources. BCCDKY works closely with not only landowners, but also with local schools, homeschool groups, scouts, and local, state, and federal organizations.
Position Description:
This position will be responsible for assisting BCCDKY staff and board with conservation programs including but not limited to: summer youth programs, habitat management, wildlife surveys, and public outreach programs. The position involves program planning, direct instruction for youth and adult programs and workshops, field work related to forest and watershed health projects, and assistance in the management of the Earl and Hazel Jones Center for Conservation.
DUTIES
Education and Outreach Programs
• Assist with the planning and facilitation of family programs, youth programs, workshops, and community events, including some weekend programs
• Prepare documents and materials for display boards, quarterly newsletters, blogs, and social media posts
Forest Health and Habitat Management
• Assist with invasive species management, trail work, and habitat improvements at the Earl and Hazel Jones Center for Conservation
• Assist with forest health plans for county residents and landowners
• Forest and Watershed Health Research
• Assist with wildlife and biodiversity surveys, including acoustic bat monitoring
• Assist with stream monitoring projects on occasion
• Provide mentoring and support for interns and students conducting independent research projects
Administration
• Work with staff to organize and inventory district files and supplies
• Attend appropriate staff and board meetings
• Attend appropriate training courses pertaining to job duties, including First Aid and CPR
• Other duties as assigned
