About the position

The Conservation Organizer at the Sierra Club's Montana Chapter plays a pivotal role in advancing the organization's mission to protect the environment and promote social justice. This position is based in Missoula, Montana, and involves regular travel throughout the state, with some opportunities for remote work. The Conservation Organizer is responsible for organizing campaigns that achieve tangible victories and build grassroots power to fulfill Sierra Club's priorities, which include addressing the biodiversity crisis, transforming the energy economy, protecting communities from pollution, ensuring access to the outdoors for all, and safeguarding our lands, water, and wildlife. The Conservation Organizer will work closely with volunteers, partners, and staff across Montana, utilizing various strategic levers of the Sierra Club, including legal, communications, digital strategies, and subject matter expertise. A key aspect of this role is developing a comprehensive volunteer development strategy that supports volunteers from onboarding to leadership through training, coaching, and mentorship. The Conservation Organizer will also create educational materials, conduct research on priority issues, and represent the Sierra Club at community events, engaging with government officials, the media, and the public. In addition to campaign management, the Conservation Organizer will focus on building local capacity to achieve conservation goals, particularly among low-income and disadvantaged populations. The role requires a commitment to equity and justice, ensuring that campaigns are inclusive of frontline and directly impacted communities. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of conservation issues, organizing experience, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Responsibilities
• Participate in the creation of a state strategy while leading specific campaigns, balancing state and local priorities.

• Develop and carry out individual campaign organizing plans, including organizing tactics, conducting research, and developing engagement strategies.
,
• Build healthy, mutually accountable relationships with National and Chapter staff and volunteers to carry out Sierra Club priorities.
,
• Develop a comprehensive volunteer development strategy to support volunteers from onboarding to leadership through training, coaching, and mentorship.
,
• Develop strategic communication and grassroots engagement strategies and metrics, representing Sierra Club priorities to public officials and the media.
,
• Build, maintain, and participate on teams to advance state-level specific campaign work and Chapter organization building.
,
• Build local capacity to achieve conservation goals, focusing on low-income and other disadvantaged populations.

Requirements
• Knowledge of conservation and environmental issues, including public lands and wildlife management.
,
• Experience as a field organizer and/or leading community organizing campaigns.
,
• Experience planning or implementing a state or state-level campaign, including developing strategy and tactics.
,
• Track record of recruiting and developing volunteer leaders along a progression of leadership.
,
• Demonstrated leadership experience working within a team structure.
,
• Highly developed verbal, written, and digital communication skills.
,
• Experience using quantitative and qualitative data to inform and evaluate organizing work.
,
• Working knowledge and experience with G-Suite, Zoom, Canva, Mobilize, Salesforce, and VAN.

Nice-to-haves
• Knowledge of the political, policy, and regulatory landscape in the state.

• Ability to craft competitive grant documents and manage grant awards/sub-awards.

• Self-starter with project management and facilitation skills.
