Job Description

The City of Burlington, Vermont is hiring a Conservation Field Specialist to manage natural areas and gardens, focusing on conservation education and climate resilience. Responsibilities include developing stewardship projects, managing volunteers, and collaborating with community organizations. Candidates should have at least 3 years of conservation experience and a willingness to learn new skills. The position offers a salary of $16.50–19.50 per hour and does not require a degree.
This position is responsible for work related to the conservation, stewardship and management of natural areas and gardens, including nature based solutions related to climate action. Duties also include managing volunteers who are implementing projects related to conservation, management and stewardship goals.
• Manage stewardship of natural areas and gardens that support conservation education and climate change resilience.
• In partnership with the Land Steward, develop and implement work plans to support regenerative and restorative landscapes, permaculture, and green infrastructure project sites.
• Assist the Land Steward and Field Naturalist with developing stewardship projects for UVM service learning groups, local organizations, private landowners, schools, afterschool programs, participants, park patrons and other volunteers for BPRW, VMN, Grow Wild, and Burlington Wildways.
• Stewardship Projects shall be related but not limited to:
• Building of tree relocation and prioritization plan for 311 North Ave
• Native Habitat Restoration:
• Invasive species tracking
• Regenerative plantings
• Wildlife monitoring and tracking
• Food security
• Soil Health
• Assist in the creation and management of educational opportunities
• Manage and lead communication.
• Assist as a liaison with service learning partners and community volunteers
• Assist in the creation and management of native seed and plant nurseries and provide opportunities for education
• Collaborate with Land Steward and Field Naturalist on contributing content for website and Conservation Newsletter
• Other initiatives as they arise
• Minimum 3 years experience in the conservation field
• Familiarity with nature based solutions to climate adaptation preferred
• Exposure and interest to natural sciences, agriculture, anti-racism, facilitative leadership, community organizing, decolonized landscapes, soil health and permaculture
• Willingness to learn and develop carpentry skills, vegetation management and other skills as needed
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Vermont class D Driver’s License
