Conservation Education Ecologist II

Job Title: Conservation Education Ecologist II

Job Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt (40 hrs/wk)

Relationships: Works with all departments, members of the public and youth in particular

Location: Tracy Aviary Nature Center at Pia Okwai (80%) and Tracy Aviary at Liberty Park (20%)

Compensation: Hourly, $18.00/hr

Benefits: Access to Health Insurance, Paid time off, Sick leave, access to 401k retirement after 1 year.

Schedule: Typically Tuesday through Saturday or Wednesday through Sunday. Schedule also needs to be flexible to accommodate being present for events and other programs that may happen after hours, weekends, and holidays.

Job Summary: Tracy Aviary’s Conservation Science Program is seeking a full-time Conservation Education Ecologist who will support our ongoing programs and engage community members, youths to adults, through conservation education programming. Our Conservation Science and Education Program helps conserve birds and their habitats through community science. Focusing on key local habitats and pressing regional conservation issues, our goals are to gather novel information about local avian ecology, inform habitat restoration and stewardship, and engage a diverse community in scientific data collection and environmental education.

Primary Duties:

Youth Education (50%)
• Lead nature-based STEM, art, and recreational programs at the Nature Center at Pia Okwai geared toward local youth
• Assist with the development of curriculum and preparation for year-round youth education programs
• Deliver occasional offsite educational programming

Adult Education & Community Engagement (40%)
• Engage with community members visiting the Nature Center at Pia Okwai, answering questions, and wayfinding
• Assist with the coordination of Conservation talk nights and adult education opportunities
• Represent Conservation at Aviary special events and Nature Center operations
• Support partnerships with community organizations that provide education opportunities both on and off campus

Conservation Support (10%)
• Provide support for Community Science projects hosted at the Nature Center at Pia Okwai including but not limited to Nest Box Monitoring, Tree Monitoring and Bird Banding
• Assist Conservation Ecologists and Director of Conservation with projects as needed

• Strong work ethic and ability to accomplish tasks independently
• Experience working with Indigenous communities and embracing different cultures
• A practitioner of emotional intelligence

Preferred Qualifications:
• An associate’s degree or higher with coursework in environmental education, conservation science, wildlife biology, ecology, or related field, or equivalent work experience
• Knowledge of local bird and plant species
• Bilingual, English/Spanish
• Experience promoting diversity and inclusion in conservation activities
• Experience implementing community science projects
• Ability to identify local birds by sight and sound
• Grant-writing experience
• Background in science communication and outreach
• Experience in working, reciprocating and listening with West Side communities.
• Ability to pivot as an individual and as a team member

Reporting Relationship: Supervised and managed by the Conservation Education Manager
