About the position
The Conservation Crew Member position at Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) is a full-time, seasonal role designed for young adults aged 18-30 who are interested in engaging in meaningful outdoor work that benefits North Carolina's natural resources. This position is part of the Fall 2024 Trail Crew, which will operate from September 3rd, 2024, through November 20th, 2024. Crew members will be based out of Bahama, NC, but will camp and work in various locations across the state, performing a wide array of conservation projects, particularly focused on trail construction and maintenance. As a Conservation Crew Member, individuals will work under the guidance of crew leaders and alongside fellow crew members to complete essential conservation service projects. The role is entry-level, and while prior outdoor experience is beneficial, it is not a requirement. Crew members are expected to embrace learning opportunities, face challenges, and foster a positive and inclusive team environment. They will be responsible for completing project work as directed by their crew leader or site supervisor, ensuring accountability and collaboration within the crew. The projects will involve various tasks such as full trail construction, trail maintenance, dry stone masonry, rough carpentry, and building drainage structures. Crew members will work long hours in the field, typically 8-10 hours a day, and will have the opportunity to learn about conservation practices and develop skills relevant to natural resource management. The position also includes a structured feedback and evaluation process to support personal and professional growth throughout the service term.
Responsibilities
• Work collaboratively with crew members and leaders to complete conservation projects.

• Participate in trail construction and maintenance activities, including dry stone masonry and carpentry.

• Engage in habitat improvement and ecological restoration tasks as needed.

• Maintain a positive and inclusive team environment during all project activities.

• Adhere to safety protocols and effectively communicate any hazards encountered during work.

• Participate in group discussions on conservation topics during evening camp meetings.

• Set personal goals and participate in performance evaluations with crew leaders.
Requirements
• Must be between the ages of 18 and 30 (exceptions for Veterans up to age 35).

• Must have US Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency status.
,
• Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
,
• Must pass background checks, including the National Sex Offender Public Registry and Federal/State criminal background checks.

• No previous experience is required, but comfort in outdoor settings is helpful.

• Ability to work effectively on rugged terrain and in inclement weather.
Nice-to-haves
• Previous experience in outdoor work or conservation projects.

• Knowledge of Leave No Trace principles.

• Basic skills in using hand tools and outdoor equipment.
