Job Description

The City of Lethbridge is hiring a Communications and Outreach Technician for a 1-year term in the Waste and Environment Department. The role involves outreach, education, and communications, including project management, public events, and customer support. Candidates should have at least 2 years of post-secondary education in relevant fields and strong interpersonal skills. The position requires 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with some evenings and weekends.
Our Waste and Environment Department has an opening for an Outreach and Education Technician in a one (1) year term position capacity. As part of the Infrastructure Services group, reporting to the Education and Outreach Lead, you will be joining a dedicated group of professionals with a passion for our environment, that are focused on customer needs, tangible, effective results and maintaining a supportive team environment.

WAGE: $40.24 per hour

STATUS: 1 Year Term Position

HOURS: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday and evenings and weekends as required

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position will support the Waste & Environment Department with a primary focus on outreach, education and communications. Work will include data gathering, research, solution development, performance reporting, project management support, customer assistance/outreach support, and other technical and general duties. The responsibilities can be described as follows:
• Establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with staff, governmental agencies, contractors, and the public
• Update Manager and other team members on project status, opportunities, and challenges
• Organize, plan and execute regular outreach activities and programming for the Waste & Environment Department.
• Promoting environmentally responsible actions through presentations, phone calls, face-to-face meetings, and networking
• Organize and lead public events and meeting with community members as a representative of the City of Lethbridge
• Responsible design, creation, maintenance of communications materials, support website updates, bookings, customer service, signs and tours.
• Direct and oversee outsourced work performed by external contractors/vendors
• Compiling & analyzing communications information, data, and reporting out of key performance indicators
• Project management including research, planning, scheduling, organizing, analyzing, report writing, communicating with stakeholders, making recommendations
• Preparation and presentation of written and oral reports on specific waste/environment-related topics
• Support for other Waste & Environment Department activities, programs, projects, and initiatives
• Providing outreach support and customer assistance. This will include leading participation in the activities that support the strategy with educational promotions, information and content development, and researching successful techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum 2 years of post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Management, or Communications.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint (or other presentation software), design or publishing software (example: Adobe Creative Cloud programs, such as Illustrator and Photoshop)
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills that will result in effective working relationships & a team environment
• Community-Based Social Marketing knowledge and experience, would be an asset.
• Demonstrated experience in the areas of customer service and working in a team environment
• Friendly, open-minded, respectful communication style to talk tactfully with difficult people, internally and externally
• Technical & public writing skills for the creation of supporting materials for stakeholder reporting and information dissemination.
• Ability to work independently and focus on priorities among multiple assignments
• Working knowledge about waste and recycling issues and processes is mandatory
• Ability to conduct research and analyze technical data, and present recommendations from the results
• Project and change management implementation experience
• Experience in complex spreadsheet application and technical data analysis
• A valid, class 5 Operator’s license
