Job Description

This is a remote position and can be located anywhere in the US.

Overview

The Commercialization Expert serves as the strategic bridge between emerging industrial technologies and real‑world deployment. This role evaluates new clean-tech and industrial innovations to determine which are viable, scalable, and ready for introduction into utility programs or industrial processes. Acting as a systems thinker and ecosystem connector, this person analyzes technical claims, business models, market fit, startup maturity, and commercialization pathways. They will influence which technologies utilities should pilot, invest in, or adopt—making this a highly impactful, externally facing role within the new technology commercialization space.

What You’ll Do
• Evaluate emerging industrial and clean‑tech solutions for technical readiness, market applicability, scalability, and deployment potential.
• Conduct macro‑level techno‑economic (TEA) and commercialization assessments, translating vendor or startup claims into realistic expectations.
• Assess startup maturity, including manufacturing scale‑up potential, operational stability, market positioning, and technology differentiation.
• Identify the best industrial or utility applications for each technology and articulate clear pathways to adoption.
• Build business cases, pilot concepts, and executive‑ready presentations to support utility or customer investment decisions.
• Engage with accelerators, national laboratories, venture-backed startups, and innovation partners to source and evaluate technologies.
• Provide strategic guidance to internal modeling teams and utility clients on emerging technology viability.
• Participate in technology-related site visits, process walkthroughs, or industrial “treasure hunts” as needed.
• Travel (~25%) to conferences, incubators, client sites, and technology demonstrations.

Required Technical Skills
• Demonstrated commercialization analysis experience—evaluating technologies for market fit, deployment readiness, and scalability.
• Strong capability in product and technology evaluation, including distinguishing between theoretical claims and achievable performance.
• Understanding of business models, value chains, and partnership structures relevant to technology deployment.
• Familiarity with startup funding mechanisms (pre‑seed, seed, venture, private equity) and the dynamics of early‑stage technology growth.
• Experience performing macro‑feasibility assessments that combine technical, financial, and market considerations.

Preferred Technical Skills
• Background working with or within National Lab commercialization offices, accelerators, incubators, or clean-tech innovation programs.
• Experience in or exposure to industrial processes or manufacturing environments.
• Prior involvement in utility programs, industrial pilots, or energy innovation initiatives.
• Experience navigating ecosystems of vendors, technology developers, investors, or government energy agencies.

Soft Skills
• Systems thinker able to connect technologies, markets, stakeholders, and commercialization pathways.
• Strong executive communication and presentation skills—capable of delivering insights to utility leaders and decision makers.
• Relationship builder with the ability to establish trust quickly across diverse stakeholder groups.
• Highly perceptive—skilled at identifying what is realistic vs. overstated in technology claims or startup stories.
• Entrepreneurial mindset with comfort operating in fast‑moving, ambiguous, and evolving program environments.

Work Environment
• Remote-first role with regular virtual collaboration.
• Approximately 25% travel for conferences, incubator visits, stakeholder meetings, and technology demonstrations.
• Highly dynamic environment bridging technology teams, utilities, startups, and innovation programs.
• Requires comfort managing multiple high‑visibility initiatives simultaneously.
