Job Description
The Global Buildings Performance Network is hiring a Climate-Resilient School Construction and Retrofitting Engineer in Georgia. The role involves assessing and improving school infrastructure for climate resilience, conducting field assessments, and providing technical recommendations for construction practices. Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years of experience in civil or structural engineering, especially in climate-vulnerable contexts. The position requires collaboration with local engineers and stakeholders.
Climate-Resilient School Construction And Retrofitting Engineer GBPN works in close collaboration with different partner organizations to strengthen the capacity of the education sector to adapt to climate change through improved policies, infrastructure standards, school safety, and environmental awareness, with a focus on climate-resilient, green, and inclusive school infrastructure.
The Opportunity The climate-resilient school construction and retrofitting engineer could be invited to provide site-level technical expertise to support the assessment and improvement of school infrastructure under local climate conditions and natural hazards. Key responsibilities include:
Review existing school building typologies, construction practices, and technical specifications, assessing their performance under local natural and climate hazards including earthquakes, extreme heat, flooding, heavy rainfall, and strong winds, among others. Conduct field and site-level assessments of school infrastructure to identify structural vulnerabilities and performance gaps. Develop technical recommendations on affordable and resilient construction techniques, material selection, and climate adaptation measures suited to local conditions. Support building retrofitting and structural improvement by identifying practical solutions to enhance safety, durability, environmental performance, and thermal comfort of existing schools. Contribute to the technical analysis of climate-resilient and green construction solutions. Prepare, review and comment on construction drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. Work closely with cost consultants to inform cost analysis for projects. Stakeholder engagement includes:
Liaise with local engineers, contractors, and construction professionals during field assessments. Participate in technical meetings and workshops as required. Support the preparation of technical guidance and training materials related to resilient construction. Governance and compliance includes:
Ensure adherence to organizational policies, including safeguarding, equity, diversity, and child protection. Comply with environmental and social safeguards in all field activities. Tentative Deliverables The expert is expected to contribute to the following:
Field assessment report documenting findings from site visits, including assessment of existing building typologies, structural conditions, and climate performance. Technical recommendations report outlining resilient construction techniques, material options, retrofitting solutions, and adaptation measures suited to local conditions. Construction technical inputs including preparation and/or review of drawings, specifications, or technical annexes as required. Qualifications We are seeking a professional with the following background and experience:
Minimum 7 years of experience in structural or civil engineering, construction, or building rehabilitation, ideally in climate-vulnerable contexts. Academic background in civil or structural engineering, architecture, or a related field. Demonstrated experience in climate-resilient or green building design and construction. Experience with school or public infrastructure projects is an advantage. Familiarity with construction practices, materials, and building conditions. Strong field assessment and technical analysis skills, including structural simulation modeling. How To Respond Interested candidates should submit a proposal including the following:
