Job Description
SMEC Services Pty Limited is seeking a Civil Engineer/Technologist in New South Wales, Australia. The role involves technical design, project management, and mentoring junior staff. Responsibilities include supervising teams, drafting technical reports, managing project budgets, and ensuring compliance with design specifications. Candidates should have a relevant engineering degree and at least 3 years of experience in civil design, particularly in transportation and municipal services infrastructure.
REPORTS TO: Section Manager/Senior Technologist or other person appointed as supervisor
PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE
This position is responsible for the technical design of projects within the section and will be required to provide assistance to Professional Engineers.
The Responsibilities
• Supervise and manage small teams (Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, Graduates)
• Mentor Technicians, Graduate Technologists and/or Graduate Engineers in relevant software tools
• Check the work of other team members
• Develop increased design ability and quality
• Draft technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality
• Make technical decisions and provide solutions rather than one completed end result
• Able to present / represent their technical work
• Able to draft responses to straightforward bids – assistance sought with commercial aspects
• Develop knowledge of the commercial aspects of project management
• Develop understanding of Functional Unit technologies and markets
• Ability to check and inspect constructed works for compliance with design and specifications
• Construction administration and monitoring
• Preparation of tenders for construction including BoQ’s and specifications
• Preparation of tender bids to clients including draft cost estimates
• Development of internal standards and implementing them
• Develop solutions to complex engineering problems
• Perform design work duties under the supervision of a Professional Engineer/Technologist/Other Professionals
• Apply SMEC’s systems and procedures and ensure enforcement
• Working with clients and municipal line departments to capture their requirements
• Compilation of contract documentation and specification including measurement files
• Client invoicing
• Project auditing (if assigned the role of quality auditor)
• Project management
• Project financial forecasting, budgets and associated resource planning
• Draughting

• Proficiency in civil design and analysis software packages
Recommended Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
• Bachelor of Engineering degree or Bachelor of Technology degree/higher degree from an accredited university
• Minimum 3 years of practical experience in design of transportation and/or municipal services infrastructure, bulk water and sewerage infrastructure
• Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets
• Knowledge of basic project management and the use of project management software
• Working knowledge of Autodesk Civil3D
• Working knowledge of Infraworks, Storm & Sewer Analyses, iDAS, Water Design Software, etc will be advantageous.
• Experience with BIM systems would be advantageous.
• Basic Knowledge of the commercial aspects of project management.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to effectively write technical reports.
• Experience in Government standards, codes and documentation.
• Experience in design management and design delivery for projects.
• Experience in managing professional teams of medium/large projects, would be beneficial.
• Experience in administering GCC 2015 projects will be beneficial
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a diverse and multi- disciplinary environment
