About the position

The Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer (CSSO) at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) plays a pivotal role in leading the organization’s sustainability initiatives and corporate strategy. This position is crucial as LADWP is at the forefront of the clean energy transition, committed to fostering sustainable and equitable growth for the communities it serves. The CSSO will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Engineer, overseeing the operations and activities of the Sustainability and Environmental groups. This includes managing the corporate sustainability report, cap and trade initiatives, Green House Gas emission reporting, and the Federal grants team. The CSSO will also be responsible for developing and implementing electrification strategies, hydrogen initiatives, equity strategies, and programs related to Electric Vehicles and Vehicle to Grid technologies. In this role, the CSSO will engage with key stakeholders, including environmental and social NGOs, to foster relationships that support LADWP’s sustainability and strategic goals. The CSSO will champion the development of enterprise-wide equitable environmental strategies aimed at better serving customers and communities while driving sustainability growth and reducing environmental impact across the organization. Additionally, the CSSO will work closely with various divisions to establish strategic programs and partnerships that align with sustainability goals, showcasing LADWP’s commitment to economic development and job creation through sustainable practices. Innovation is a key focus for the CSSO, who will be expected to demonstrate leadership in the clean energy transition and shape the corporate narrative around LADWP’s progress. Establishing new goals and key performance indicators will be essential to monitor and improve performance continuously. The CSSO will also be responsible for managing a team and ensuring that the organization meets its sustainability objectives effectively.

Responsibilities
• Lead the development and execution of sustainability strategies for LADWP.

• Manage the Sustainability and Environmental groups, including corporate sustainability reporting and cap and trade initiatives.

• Engage with key stakeholders, including NGOs and economic development organizations, to support sustainability goals.

• Develop equitable environmental strategies to better serve customers and communities.

• Establish strategic programs and partnerships aligned with sustainability objectives.

• Demonstrate innovation in clean energy transition and shape corporate narrative on sustainability progress.

• Set new goals and key performance indicators to monitor performance improvements.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

• At least four years of management experience at the Director level with progressively increasing responsibility in corporate strategy, corporate sustainability, and/or environmental planning and management.

• Demonstrated leadership experience through specific projects and initiatives.

Nice-to-haves
• Sustainability Excellence Associate (SEA) credential or Sustainability Excellence Professional (SEP) credential from the International Society of Sustainability Professionals.
