Job Description

Huntsville Utilities is seeking an Energy Services Inspector responsible for modeling new residential homes, supervising inspections, and ensuring compliance with the Alabama Energy Code. The role requires communication with builders, energy technicians, and third-party providers. Candidates should have a high school diploma and relevant experience in residential construction or HVAC. The position involves both office and field work, with physical demands including inspections in attics and crawl spaces.

Job Statement

The responsibility of this position includes the modeling of new residential homes using REM/rate software, communication with Huntsville Utilities’ third-party provider Home Energy Concepts Corporation, supervision of field inspections and data entry completed by Energy Technicians, random quality assurance assessments of Energy Technician field inspections, and communication with builders and developers. Also, completes field inspections to ensure compliance to The State of Alabama Energy Code.

Essential Duties
• Model new residential dwellings using REM/rate software to ensure a HERS Index that meets compliance to The State of Alabama Energy Code.
• Communicate with area builders, developers, and construction managers as to inspection status, technical questions, and or information.
• Communicate with energy technicians in the field concerning any issues involving inspections, equipment failures, or builder questions.
• Coordinate daily workload and route scheduling for Energy Technicians.
• Communicate with third party provider Home Energy Concepts Corporation on any reports that need to be expedited.
• Communicate with local inspection departments to ensure no houses miss their closing date.
• Train or retrain Energy Technicians concerning any issues that arise in the field. Also, perform random quality assurance checks in the field with Energy Technicians.
• Maintain working knowledge of New Homes Application Software and communicate any issues to Technical Services Department.
• Ability to troubleshoot issues with performance testing equipment.
• Must be able to perform both office and field tasks in order to ensure smooth processes as needed to accommodate unusual demand and or employee absence.
• Assumes other duties and responsibilities as directed.

Additional Duties

Job Requirements

Education/Training/Certifications: High School graduate or equivalent. Must pass Field Rater Certification test within eighteen months. A maximum of two attempts from hire date is allowed.

Experience/Skills: Residential home construction and/or HVAC installation experience preferred.

Equipment: REM/rate modeling software. Use of a variety of HVAC measurement devices including velometers, amp probes, blower door, and duct blaster test equipment. A good driving record is required.

Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions: Ability to crawl into attics and foundation crawl spaces in order to provide inspections. Ability to lift at least 50 pounds. Ability to climb ladders in order to seal supply registers as needed for new home testing. Performs some sedentary activities in an office environment; some tasks require repetitive motion over an extended period of time.

Other: This position is considered a safety sensitive position. All employees in safety sensitive positions are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
