Job Description:

Background

Sustainability & Carbon is a central team shaping and driving Shell’s sustainability and carbon priorities, ambitions, and targets, to keep Shell compliant, competitive and resilient through the Energy Transition. We do this by providing expertise-based thought leadership on Shell’s sustainability and carbon vision and priorities to enable quality EC and Board decisions. The team also develops and maintains focused sustainability and carbon capabilities and provides senior-level external representation where our expertise is required.

Shell has set the ambition to be a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050 and believes we can be the investment case and the partner of choice through the energy transition. The energy transition will see fundamental shifts in the way the world produces and consumes energy, providing significant investment opportunities as well as risks to our business. In a rapidly changing external landscape, ensuring we identify clear policy positions and drive impactful external advocacy can drive material value for Shell. As an example, our annual forecast cost exposure to carbon prices is estimated to be around $1 billion in 2024 and around $4 billion in 2033.

Where you fit in

Reporting to the VP Carbon Strategy, this role will initially be an individual performer and will lead a natural team across P&A, GAR and SEAM. The incumbent will be expected to be able to work with a significant degree of autonomy with decision-making accountability.

What’s the role?

• Lead group-wide strategic carbon-related projects with external focus e.g. Carbon credits, Energy Transition Strategy 2027
• Act as interface with Sustainability team to identify collaboration opportunities on issues that extend beyond climate and carbon and have broader social and environmental considerations e.g. Just Transition.
• Represent Shell externally within carbon/climate related industry groups or fora where appropriate.

Moreover, your key accountabilities are as follows:
• Act as DE/BOM for relevant carbon strategy initiatives, including but not limited to identification, definition and implication of key external climate and carbon external enablers.
• Develop and maintain process to prioritise key climate and carbon related external enablers.
• Ensure priorities have clear ‘defined outcomes’ and are aligned across key senior stakeholders in Strategy, P&A, Group Reporting.
• Manage implementation of activities that deliver ‘defined outcomes’ across the prioritised climate and carbon-related external enablers.
• Implement a continuous improvement process across prioritised actions to ensure we adopt and embed a ‘plan, do, check, act’ across climate and carbon-related external enablers.
• Act as focal point to Carbon Reporting Committee (EVP/VP level body) to provide updates on progress on key external climate and carbon related issues.
• Represent Shell in industry associations and fora as appropriate.
• Drive awareness and capacity building in the organisation around key carbon external issues.
• As a member of the Carbon Strategy LT, incumbent will be expected to lead certain foundational goals for the Carbon Strategy team that include team development and capability building and organisational effectiveness.

What we need from you
