POLITICO is hiring a California Energy, Environment and Climate Reporter based in Sacramento, CA. The role involves covering California's energy and environmental policies, breaking news on regulations, and contributing to climate coverage. Candidates should have familiarity with state legislative processes and strong writing skills. This is a hybrid position, offering a salary between $85,000 and $115,000, along with various benefits.
POLITICO is seeking an enterprising reporter to join our growing California team to cover California energy, environment and climate policy.

We're looking for a reporter to track the fifth-largest economy's nation-leading energy and environmental policies — and the politics, personalities and pressures shaping those policies.

This dynamic beat spans a cross-section of California's suite of energy, environmental and climate policies and mechanisms, which may include but is not limited to the state's power grid, carbon markets, renewable energy, water management, wildfire response, fossil fuel development, and developing technologies.

We're looking for an energetic and flexible self-starter who can identify, excavate and advance multiple storylines simultaneously, breaking real-time news about bills and regulations as well as seeing the bigger picture and writing enterprise stories from an elevated perspective.

You'll be an integral part of our climate coverage, contributing regularly to our daily California Climate newsletter, as well as writing for subscriber and homepage audiences on the state, national and global levels. You'll be on a team with two other reporters and an editor, all devoted to California energy, environment and transportation coverage.

Successful candidates will have familiarity with state legislative and agency proceedings and an appreciation of California's role as an incubator of policies that often go nation- and worldwide.

This is a hybrid role based out of Sacramento, CA.

What You’ll Need
• Familiarity with state and national environment and energy policies and politics
• A track record of clean, clear, authoritative writing
• Ability to break news and file on deadline while also pursuing enterprise stories
• Collaborative spirit to work as part of a team and with colleagues across the POLITICO newsroom
• Please submit a resume, cover letter and 4-6 clips with your application.

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Sacramento, CA is $85,000.00-$115,000.00 per year. The final salary offered, which may be higher than the current anticipated salary range, to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and years of experience within the job, type and years of experience within the industry, education, etc.

In addition to base salary, we offer on-going career development coaching, a flexible vacation plan, fully paid six-month parental leave, 401k match, medical, dental, and vision insurance, phone and commuting reimbursements, and more.
