Trout Unlimited is seeking a seasonal, part-time Conservation Hydrology Field Technician based in Berkeley, CA. The role involves outdoor data collection, streamflow monitoring, and equipment maintenance across various remote locations in California. Candidates should be passionate about environmental work, capable of long field days, and able to travel frequently. The position requires strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently in diverse team settings.
Description
The Conservation Hydrology Field Technician is a seasonal, part-time position that will work primarily with the Trout Unlimited (TU) Conservation Hydrology program based out of Berkeley, California. The Conservation Hydrology field technician will work as a member of an inter-disciplinary team to provide scientific support to various partner-based and process-based approaches to restore streamflow and habitat in CA’s coastal and Sierra headwater streams.
This is a field-based position, and the ideal candidate will love spending time outdoors collecting high quality environmental data. The Field Technician will conduct frequent streamflow monitoring trips and assist with data entry, field equipment maintenance, landowner outreach, and various other tasks. This position will require long drives and multi-day trips to remote areas in locations from Santa Cruz County in the south to Mendocino County in the north. Typical field days may exceed 8 hours including driving time.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Conduct frequent, day-long site visits to measure streamflow and groundwater levels.
• Conduct monthly multi-day trips to remote areas, to measure streamflow and groundwater.
• Photo document site conditions.
• Maintain rigorous data collection and assessment protocols.
• Assist with the installation of gages or other streamflow monitoring equipment.
• Assist with repairs and/or the replacement of parts at field sites as necessary.
• Update databases with new field data after completing monitoring trips.
• Help maintain equipment and report maintenance, or other equipment needs to the Conservation Hydrology team.
• This is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities.
Requirements
• Passion for the environmental field.
• A love for spending time outdoors.
• Ability to work long days in strenuous outdoor conditions until tasks are completed.
• Ability to work consecutive field days that may require overnight stays for multiple days.
• Ability to hike and transport heavy objects and equipment through rough terrain.
• A valid driver’s license.
• Ability to travel long distances frequently.
• Ability to drive to remote locations.
• TU staff and interns may need to drive their personal cars to field sites and are reimbursed based on the federal standard mileage rate.
• Must be able to work non-standard work hours to fulfill job requirements, including some weekends.
• Ability to work independently and make decisions in the field while working alone.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Self-motivation and the ability to take initiative.
• Ability to work with a diverse team.
• Ability to work variable hours per week based on field schedule (roughly 32 hours per week, but could range from 20-40 hours per week).
