Connections Engineer, BESS

Climate
17 are working with a well-established player in the battery storage space, who are developing, building and operating BESS projects UK Wide.

They are currently looking to add to the technical team, a Connections Engineer. This role would suit someone with 1-2 years’ experience in Grid, Power Systems and Electrical Engineering for renewable energy projects that is looking to make the next step in their career.

The Connections Engineer will be responsible for coordinating and managing all grid connection activities for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects connecting to the electricity distribution network. Working closely with the Development Team, this role ensures efficient, compliant, and cost-effective delivery of connections from initial feasibility to energisation.
Key Responsibilities Grid Strategy and Application Management
• Prepare and submit grid connection applications to Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs).
• Maintain an in-depth understanding of connection processes, engineering standards, and relevant grid codes (e.g., G99, G100).
• Support early-stage grid feasibility assessments to inform project siting and connection strategy.
Technical and Commercial Evaluation
• Review and interpret grid connection offers, identifying potential risks, errors, and opportunities for cost or design optimisation.
• Liaise with consultants and technical specialists to evaluate the technical and commercial implications of offers.
• Provide insights on connection design options to achieve efficient and cost-effective solutions.
Project Delivery and Process Improvement
• Track and report on the progress of all grid connection activities through each project phase.
• Coordinate with network operators, contractors, and internal project teams to ensure smooth and timely delivery of grid connection works.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes, templates, and workflows related to grid connections.
Information Management and Reporting
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all grid connection data, applications, and offers within internal systems.
• Prepare regular progress reports and risk updates for the Development Team and senior stakeholders.
• Ensure data integrity and transparency across all project stages.
Stakeholder Coordination and Representation
• Serve as the primary point of contact for grid-related matters with external stakeholders, including DNOs, IDNOs, and technical advisors.
• Represent the company’s interests in meetings, consultations, and industry forums.
• Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with key industry contacts.
Development Support and Opportunity Assessment
• Assist in identifying and assessing new BESS development sites using mapping tools, grid data, and feasibility studies.
• Support the Development Team in evaluating project opportunities and connection potential.
• Undertake other tasks as reasonably required in support of broader team objectives.
Required Experience
• You will have a technical degree ideally in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
• In-depth understanding of Great Britain’s distribution and transmission networks, including grid connection procedures.
• Familiarity with the Distribution Code and relevant Engineering Recommendations such as G99, G100, P28, and G5.
• Experience working on projects connecting to the low voltage distribution network.
• Awareness of the Connection and Use of System Code (CUSC) and its implications for grid connection processes.
• Understanding of the internal structures, teams, and escalation routes within DNOs and Transmission Network Operators (TNOs).
• Experience in the renewable energy or BESS sectors.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities within tight timelines.
• Proficiency in using grid mapping tools, GIS systems, or other relevant software.
