About the position

The Bureau of Land Management - Natural Resources Management AmeriCorps Member position is an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in natural resource conservation work in Eastern Idaho. Starting on May 1, 2024, this role involves working as part of a team to collect vegetation indices and conduct various vegetation and range improvement treatments on public lands, particularly in sagebrush steppe communities. The position is designed for two AmeriCorps members who will engage in hands-on conservation efforts that contribute to the health and sustainability of the local ecosystem. Members will be involved in several key activities, including pre and post-treatment vegetation inventories for fuels reduction efforts, post-fire vegetation recovery assessments, and sagebrush recovery inventories in areas impacted by wildfires. These tasks are crucial for understanding the ecological impacts of fire and for guiding restoration efforts in habitats that are vital for species such as the greater sage-grouse. The role also includes noxious weed control and inventory, which is essential for maintaining the integrity of native plant communities against invasive species. In addition to these core responsibilities, members will assess fence-line conditions to identify modifications that can facilitate wildlife movement. This aspect of the job emphasizes the importance of understanding and improving the interactions between wildlife and their habitats. The position is flexible, allowing members to express their interests in specific natural resource programs, such as fuels management, fire rehabilitation, fisheries, rangelands, and wildlife management. Responsibilities
• Conduct pre and post fuels reduction treatment and post-fire vegetation recovery inventories using various methods such as line-point intercept and fixed area plot methods.

• Perform sagebrush recovery inventories in vegetation communities impacted by wildfire, focusing on habitat suitability for greater sage-grouse.

• Implement noxious weed control and inventory through herbicide application and manual/mechanical treatments under supervision.

• Assess fence-line conditions on public lands to identify modifications that reduce impediments to wildlife movement.

Requirements
• Ability to identify plant species, with at least one member required to have plant identification skills.

• Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains.

• Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively with other members and field office staff.
