Job Description

The Botanical Field Crew Leader position at the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) in Hilo, HI, involves coordinating natural resource management actions for botanical resources on an Army training facility. Responsibilities include leading field teams, conducting rare plant surveys, and managing logistical challenges. Candidates should have a relevant degree and experience in vegetation monitoring. This is a full-time, field-based role, not remote.
Position Summary

A Botanical Field Crew Leader position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at the Pōhakuloa Training Area in Hawaiʻi. The role focuses on coordinating and implementing natural resource management actions for botanical resources, including rare, threatened, and endangered plant species, on a 133,000-acre Army training facility. This position is contingent upon continued funding and is designed for field-based work.

Duties & Responsibilities
• Coordinate with the Botanical Monitoring Specialist to implement field protocols such as rare plant surveys, monitoring, seed collection, and outplanting of federally listed species.
• Assist in training field staff, scheduling field tasks, and ensuring that all required data, equipment, and supplies are available.
• Oversee and lead the botanical field biologist team, ensuring adherence to safety procedures and operational protocols.
• Provide feedback on field conditions, resource status, and emergent issues to the Botanical Program Manager.
• Manage logistical challenges and maintain clear communication among team members, including coordinating activities in high hazard areas.

Minimum Qualifications
• BS/BA in botany, range science, environmental science, natural resource management, or related disciplines.
• Experience in vegetation monitoring and management of rare, threatened, and/or endangered plants.
• Proficiency with GPS, GIS (including data entry, management, analysis, and map creation), and computer programs such as MS Excel and Access.
• Ability to perform strenuous field work on rugged terrain and, when necessary, in high hazard areas.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or be able to obtain one by the employment start date.
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with native plant restoration techniques, including seed collection, propagation, and outplanting.
• Previous experience leading or coordinating field crews.
• Familiarity with chemical and mechanical control methods for invasive plant species.
• Experience working on a military installation or with previous military organizations is a plus.
