Job Description
Bloomberg Economics is seeking a Climate Economist/Econometrician in London to analyze the economic impacts of climate change and natural disasters. The role involves collaboration with various teams to build empirical expertise, develop monitoring tools, and integrate climate scenarios into macroeconomic forecasts. The candidate should have a degree in economics or related fields, with 5+ years of experience, strong analytical skills, and proficiency in English.
With close to 50 economists and 200 economics and government reporters worldwide, Bloomberg has an outstanding capacity to explain where the world is economically and politically, where it might be heading, and the ways in which geopolitical and economic forces interact.
Bloomberg Economics already offers a comprehensive macroeconomic research service for Terminal subscribers. That includes detailed forecasts, supported by thorough and original thematic research.
We are seeking a climate economist with expertise on the economic impact of climate change and natural disasters to join our growing team.
The successful candidate will work in our trade and climate team to provide quantitative and qualitative estimates of the economic impact of climate change. Initiatives in other area of climate economics - notably on the impact of transition policies - will also be encouraged.
• Collaborating with economic country desks, our country risk analyst and our modelling team, you will build empirical expertise on the economic and financial implications of natural disasters and extreme weather events. You will develop tools to monitor those events and provide qualitative and quantitative estimates of their economic impacts as they happen.
• You will also support country desks and our CGE modeler in integrating the macroeconomic implications of climate change in long-term forecasts, focusing on chronic risks (e.g. using damage functions to quantify economic losses), sea-level rise and the implications of increase in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events.
• You will work with editors to publish short research notes on the Bloomberg Terminal, and have opportunities to share research on Bloomberg media, at speaking events, and in conversations with clients.
• We'll measure success by the relevance, timeliness and quality of your quantitative analysis and of your publications. We will also take into consideration the value you add to country desks analysis and long-term forecasts.
We'll trust you to:
• Take the lead on monitoring and assessing extreme events and their economic and financial implications
• Build expertise and tools to integrate climate scenarios into long-term macroeconomic projections, in partnership with country desks and climate macroeconomic modeler
• Contribute to empirical analysis of the economic impact of transition policies.
• Collaborate with editors to publish high-quality analysis on the Bloomberg Terminal
• In line with experience, represent the team at client events, on Bloomberg TV and radio, and more broadly
• From time to time, work with Bloomberg's economic and government reporters on joint projects
You'll need to have:
• Degree in economics / econometrics / statistics, preferably in climate / environmental fields. A PhD would be a plus
• 5+ years of relevant professional experience
• Strong knowledge of natural disasters data sources and climate projections, and the ability to use theoretical and empirical analysis to provide quantitative estimates of the impact of climate change on macro-economic variables at different time horizons
• Strong writing, communication and collaboration skills
• English proficiency
• Energy and the initiative to provide a consistent flow of original, high-quality analysis and to operate in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment
We'd love to see:
• Relevant publications on extreme events and the economics of climate change
• Experience of working with geospatial / satellite data
• Experience generating content across a variety of formats, ranging from rapid turnaround responses to events to longer-term collaborative research
• Additional expertise in climate policies and experience working with Python
