About the position
The University of California, Santa Barbara is seeking a dedicated and skilled individual for the position of Bike Shop Lead Mechanic. This role is a limited appointment, with a maximum of 900 hours on pay status, and is classified under the payroll title of BLANK AST 2. The Lead Mechanic will work under the general supervision of the Bike Shop Coordinator and will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day technical and repair operations of the A.S. Bike Shop. This includes organizing and managing the student mechanics, ensuring adherence to safety standards, and providing high-quality bicycle repair and safety education to the UCSB community, including students, faculty, and staff. The Lead Mechanic will implement training programs for student employees based on the A.S. Bike Shop training manual, covering a wide range of bicycle types and repair techniques. The position requires a strong technical background in bicycle maintenance, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with customers and staff in a fast-paced environment. The Lead Mechanic will also be involved in special projects, including the transition plan for the A.S. Bike Shop's relocation, troubleshooting spatial organization, and developing service policies for e-bicycles. This role is crucial in maintaining the shop's mission to provide excellent service and education in bicycle repair and safety.
Responsibilities
• Organize and manage the day-to-day technical and repair operations of the A.S. Bike Shop.

• Implement training programs for student employees based on the A.S. Bike Shop training manual.

• Ensure adherence to safety standards in all repair procedures.

• Provide high-quality bicycle repair and safety education to students, faculty, and staff.

• Perform repairs and oversee the training program for Bike Shop employees on technical skills.

• Advise customers and employees on appropriate tools and equipment needed for bicycle maintenance.

• Supervise repair work and assure quality control of jobs performed.

• Track daily repair tags from initial customer authorization through final transaction.
,
• Set priorities in completing daily repairs and assign appropriate student mechanics to each repair.

• Develop a transition plan for the A.S. Bike Shop's relocation under the direction of the Bike Shop Coordinator.

• Conduct research on the e-bicycle industry and develop service policies for e-bicycles.
Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent experience.

• 1-3 years of bicycle maintenance and mechanic functionality experience.

• 1-3 years of technical skills and resources for repair and problem solving on a variety of bicycles.
