Job Summary:
The Sawmill Grader Nester is responsible for grading, sorting, and nesting lumber in a sawmill environment. This role involves inspecting lumber to ensure quality standards are met, accurately identifying defects, and ensuring that lumber is stacked or arranged in a manner that maximizes efficiency for further processing or shipping.
Key Responsibilities:
• Inspect lumber for defects such as cracks, warps, knots, and other imperfections. Assign the correct grade based on industry standards and company protocols.
• Organize lumber based on grade, size, and quality. Properly nest or stack lumber to optimize space and ensure ease of handling for subsequent processes.
• Maintain quality control by checking for any defects, moisture content, or other specifications that may affect the usability of the lumber.
• Collaborate with other sawmill workers to ensure smooth operations and to handle any quality control issues.
• Keep work areas clean and organized, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment. Adhere to safety procedures and industry regulations.
• Ensure the proper functioning of grading and sorting machinery. Report any malfunctions or maintenance needs.
• Accurately document lumber grades, quantities, and any other relevant data as required by the company’s operational procedures.
• Follow all safety guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and report any hazards or unsafe conditions immediately.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
• Previous experience in a sawmill or similar production environment is preferred, though on-the-job training may be available.
• Basic understanding of lumber grading systems and wood types is a plus. Ability to identify defects and assess the quality of lumber.
• Strong attention to detail, ability to operate or learn to operate sawmill equipment, and good organizational skills.
• Must be able to stand for extended periods, lift heavy lumber, and work in various weather conditions if outdoors.
• Must be familiar with workplace safety standards and regulations in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
