Westwood Professional Services is hiring a seasonal entry-level avian biologist for summer 2025 to support eagle monitoring efforts at an operating wind farm near Billings, Montana. This full-time field position is ideal for students or recent graduates passionate about wildlife biology, conservation, and renewable energy.

Description

The avian biologist will play a critical role in supporting risk avoidance measures through eagle monitoring at an active wind energy site. Candidates will follow strict biological protocols, complete detailed field documentation, and relocate to a location within one hour of the site. The project is based in central Montana, with work conducted outdoors in various environmental conditions. There may be opportunities for continued monitoring or future employment beyond this seasonal term.

Responsibilities
• Conduct eagle monitoring following established field protocols
• Collect and maintain precise, detailed field data
• Relocate to within one hour of the wind project site
• Work long days (15+ hours) over consecutive periods (3–4 days)
• Operate independently in rural and remote outdoor environments
• Support extended travel and overnight stays as needed
• Engage in teamwork and effective field communication

Minimum Requirements
• Currently pursuing or holding a degree in environmental science, biology, or related field
• Ability to identify bald and golden eagles in flight
• Willingness to work long hours in extreme weather and terrain
• Comfortable with wildlife encounters in rural conditions
• Strong physical stamina for walking or standing for extended periods
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
• Ability to work independently and within a team setting

Preferred Qualifications
• Additional ornithological experience
• Knowledge of MBTA, ESA, USFWS wind energy guidelines, and eagle conservation policy
• Wildlife certifications
• Familiarity with 4×4 vehicle handling and offroad navigation

Additional Notes
• This is a temporary full-time field-based role
• Compensation includes overtime pay and a $3,000 stipend for relocation and living costs
• Work may involve exposure to extreme weather and wildlife
• Opportunities for ongoing employment may be available after August 2025
