Job Description
The Associate Engineer at the City and County of San Francisco performs civil/structural engineering tasks, supervises staff, and acts as project engineer. Responsibilities include developing project scopes, preparing technical documents, conducting field investigations, and leading various engineering projects. The role involves design and repair of structures and requires knowledge of regulations. This is a full-time position based in San Francisco, CA.
Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional civil/structural engineering work in the field and office; supervises the work of related staff engaged in engineering work; and may act as the project engineer on engineering projects. The essential functions of the Associate Engineer includes: developing project work scope and fee proposals; establishing and monitoring design budgets and schedules; preparing structural calculations, technical specifications, construction estimates, contract drawings, and technical engineering reports and other documentation; developing analytical structural models; reviewing shop drawing submittals and responding to requests for information; conducting field investigations and surveys; training and mentoring staff; conducting meetings and making presentations; and performing other related duties as required.
The Associate Engineer will be the structural engineering lead responsible for a variety of engineering projects, including design of new buildings and alterations of existing buildings, design and repair of roadway structures (bridges, stairways, retaining walls, tunnels, etc.), and design and repair of miscellaneous structures such as vaults, tanks, piers, wharves, etc. The work requires interpretation of regulations, laws, policies, procedures, guidelines and standards, and utilizing them in preparation of technical documents. Associate engineers may direct activities of other engineers and drafters. He/she will also be part of investigation teams responding to earthquakes, landslides, and other structural emergencies.
Position Duties
• Prepares structural calculations, technical specifications, construction estimates;
• Prepares contract drawings;
• Develops mathematical structural models using ETABS, SAP2000, and other software;
• Provides support during construction, including reviewing submittals and RFIs;
• Conducts field investigations;
• Prepares memoranda, letters, and field reports;
• May drive a city vehicle to and from job sites; and
• Other related job duties as required.
