Job Description
The Wildlife Trust of India seeks an Assistant/Field Officer (Biologist) for the Gandak Gharial Recovery Project in Valmiki Nagar, Bihar. Candidates should have a postgraduate degree in relevant fields and experience in reptile conservation, especially crocodilians. Responsibilities include conducting field surveys, analyzing data, developing conservation plans, and collaborating with communities. Strong communication and project management skills are essential. This is a full-time position based in India.

Essential Qualification:
1.Post-graduate in Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Ecology/Science, or allied branches of life
sciences with 2-3 years of professional experience in research and conservation of reptiles,
with a focus on crocodilian and or testudine species
OR
Graduate in Zoology, Wildlife Science, or allied branches of life sciences with at least 5 years
of professional experience in wildlife research and conservation, with a focus on crocodilian
and testudine species
2.Proven skills in ecological survey design, field survey, and execution of research and
conservation project in aquatic ecosystems through appointment.
3. Experience in aquatic ecosystems, preferably focused on crocodilian and testudines’ species.
4. Strong knowledge of crocodilian and testudines’ species biology, ecology, and conservation
principles, with working experience
Desired qualification
1. Experience in ex-situ conservation of crocodilian/testudine
2. Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., R, SPSS) and GIS tools for spatial analysis and
mapping.
3. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse
stakeholders, including scientists, policymakers, and local communities.
4. Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to multitask, prioritize
tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
5. Publication(s) in national or inter-national peer-reviewed journal
Key Responsibilities :
1. Conduct field surveys to monitor gharial and other aquatic faunal populations, including population counts, nesting site surveys, and habitat assessments.
2. Analyse data collected from field surveys and research studies, using statistical methods and GIS software to assess population trends, habitat use, and threats to gharial populations.
3. Assist in the development and implementation of conservation plans and management strategies to mitigate direct and indirect threats to Gandak gharial populations.
4. Assist in collaborating with local communities, government agencies, and conservation organizations to raise awareness about gharial conservation issues and promote community-based conservation initiatives.
5. Provide training and technical support to forest department, volunteers, and community members involved in gharial conservation activities.
6. Stay updated on current research, best practices, and emerging threats related to gharial conservation, contributing to the scientific knowledge base and informing conservation strategies.
7. Support the team in conducting community consultations for conservation of gharial and river ecosystem; and any other activity for project development.
