Assistant Professor (Sustainable Materials Engineering)
The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus) seeks qualified applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to build on our strengths in the field of materials processing (in exceptional cases a tenure-track, or tenured, appointment at the rank of Associate Professor may be considered). This position is part of the University of British Columbia’s President’s Academic Excellence Initiative (PAEI) within the Faculty of Applied Science.
This cluster hire within the faculty aims to build a community of scholars ready to challenge and create fresh ways of generating and applying impactful knowledge in areas related to the theme of this cluster:

Transforming the Product Lifecycle for Global Good. The anticipated start date of the position is September 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Over its long history, the Department of Materials Engineering at UBC has distinguished itself with excellence in research, teaching and service in the field of Materials Engineering. The Department has a strong record of collaborative work within UBC and industry and promotes interdisciplinary research. In the context of this hire, the Department seeks to support research and teaching that enables society to work toward minimizing the environmental impact of materials through their entire life cycle.
Therefore, we envisage that the successful candidate will align their research and teaching activity with our goals to achieve more sustainable materials engineering, with solutions that span and enhance the range of research activities in our department (e.g. materials extraction and recovery from recycled materials and waste streams, design / manufacturing of sustainable materials, development of sustainable processes for materials production / manufacturing, and design and production of sustainable materials for energy systems).
Applicants for this position should have a demonstrated track record of (or possess clear potential to excel in) research and teaching within the topic area described above. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate how their research seeks firstly, to advance methodological innovation through their approach to collaborative working between academic disciplines and / or with non-academic partners, and secondly, to impact contemporary societal challenges.
Strong applicants are likely to be comfortable working with and learning from non-specialists in their field.
The successful candidate must develop an independent, internationally recognized research program, and seek funding, both as an individual and in collaboration with others, drawing on Government and industrial sources. The position will involve teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the supervision of graduate students at the Masters and Doctoral levels and providing service to the University and the broader community.
The successful candidate must embrace productive relationships across cultural differences and develop an equitable, diverse and inclusive learning and research approach that promotes a respectful environment for all students, staff and faculty.

The expected salary range for an Assistant Professor position is $120,000 - $130,000 per annum, plus benefits. The expected salary range for an Associate Professor position is $165,000 - $185,000 per annum, plus benefits.
