Assistant Professor of Resilient Urban Design - Charleston, SC Clemson University: College of Architecture, Art and Construction: School of Architecture Location: Clemson Design Center Charleston 701 East Bay Street Suite 202 Charleston SC 29403 Room 215 Open Date: Dec 04, 2024 Description Clemson University School of Architecture invites applications for the tenure-track (nine month) position of Assistant Professor of Resilient Urban Design, beginning August 15, 2025, in Clemson's Master of Resilient Urban Design (MRUD) program located in Charleston, South Carolina. The successful candidate is expected to teach graduate design studios and seminars within the MRUD program supporting the curriculum. The candidate is also expected to have a research agenda, maintain research activities, and communicate their research through publications and/or other forms of peer-to-peer or public transmission. All faculty are expected to support the operations of the program, school, college, and/or university through service on committees or other leadership roles. The MRUD program is a three-semester (fall, spring, summer semesters), advanced degree program for graduate students. The program is based at the Clemson Design Center in Charleston (CDCC), located in the "Cigar Factory" building at 701 East Bay Street. With its unique combination of history, culture, tourism and expanding economic base, metropolitan growth, and sensitive coastal location, the city of Charleston and its metropolitan area provides a learning laboratory for this program, which examines contemporary urban design issues through a comprehensive approach to historic, cultural, social, economic, and environmental concerns. The program focuses on resiliency and sustainability in urban design and the opportunities provided by the physical and cultural geography of the city of Charleston and its metropolitan area and coastal region through community engagement and service learning. This growing program offers opportunities for the person hired for this position to help shape the future of the MRUD program and for individual growth. The MRUD program is part of the School of Architecture, which includes a graduate program in Historic Preservation, also located at the CDCC, and graduate and undergraduate programs in Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of urban design, candidates may have training, credentials, and experience in urban design, landscape architecture, architecture, planning or other allied fields in combination with other non-design degrees. Applicants for the tenure-track position must have expertise in Urban Design and a focus in one of the following areas or combinations of these: • Design • Design and Performance • Interdisciplinary Design • Landscape Architecture • Architecture • Planning • Resiliency / Sustainability • Equitable Design • Policy and Economics • Community Engagement / Participatory Design Salary will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments at the assistant professor level. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: • Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Urban Design or an allied field. • Candidates must have an established record or demonstrated trajectory of research, scholarship, and/or creative work in urban design, and have the proficiency in written and oral communication in the English language requisite for teaching and scholarship. Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with one or more of the following: • Architecture Licensure • Landscape Architecture Licensure • Advanced Research Degree • PhD in Urban Design or an Allied Discipline • Teaching Experience • Professional Experience • Record of Grants, Publications, and/or Published Creative Work • Record of Professional or Academic Service • Other Evidence of Excellence, Recognition, or Awards in Teaching, Scholarship, and/or Service.
