Job Summary
The Department of Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering,
at the University of Texas at Arlington, invites applications for a
tenure-track assistant professor position. The position is focused
on the mechanics of sustainable and resilient materials and
structures. Of special interest are candidates with expertise and
interest in research at the materials and mechanics levels focused
on the intentional design of structures and infrastructure systems
to respond to natural and manmade disasters and disturbance as well
as long-term changes resulting from climate change through the
syntheses and integration of the disciplines of mechanics and
materials integrating form and function to use mechanics not just
to understand structural behavior but also to tailor materials for
multifunctionality. The position calls for strengths in both
materials and mechanics with applications to the development of new
materials, methodologies, and systems that ensure simultaneous
addressing of sustainability and resilience in the next generation
of civil infrastructure and for the rehabilitation of existing
civil infrastructure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Applicants will join a group of faculty with expertise in
materials, mechanics, and design in the fields of civil,
architectural, and construction engineering. They are expected to
conduct high-quality externally funded research, teaching, and
professional service, and develop both independent areas of
expertise as well as conduct joint research. The successful
candidate will be expected to support the development of curricula
and courses in this area of growing importance. Strong and fruitful
collaboration with faculty in this field will be an essential part
of the expectations.
Required Qualifications
An earned PhD in civil engineering, mechanics, materials or a
closely related field is required. Candidates with doctoral degrees
in fields other than civil engineering must be able to demonstrate
their understanding and experience with civil infrastructure
systems. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the highest
levels of research and teaching excellence and to an applied focus
for impactful research.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated research record in the areas of (a) tailored design of
materials and (b) mechanics, for the development of sustainable and
resilient structural systems; proven record of interdisciplinary
research; experience in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate
levels at a R-1 institution; experience mentoring undergraduate and
graduate students; successful record of competitive funding from
federal agencies and industry.

The College of Engineering is home to seven departments:
Bioengineering; Civil Engineering; Computer Science and
Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Industrial, Manufacturing, and
Systems Engineering; Materials Science and Engineering; and
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. With more than 7,000
students, the College is the third-largest in Texas and offers the
most comprehensive engineering degree programs in the region. It
offers 10 baccalaureate, 14 master’s, and 9 doctoral degree
programs and has ties to numerous Fortune 500 companies in the

faculty and students. The Civil Engineering Department has enjoyed

engineering, with per-faculty research expenditures totaling more

civil engineering firms in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the Texas
Department of Transportation, the Texas General Land Office, NOAA
and other government agencies.
