About the position

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) is seeking an Assistant Professor in Coastal Fisheries Management and Policy within the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM). This tenure-track position is set to begin on January 1, 2024, and is part of a strategic initiative to enhance the understanding and management of subtropical and tropical fisheries in the Pacific region. The successful candidate will engage in teaching, research, and scholarship that addresses the complex challenges faced by island nations in managing coastal and marine resources. These challenges include globalization, increasing demand for resources, evolving governance systems, and the impacts of climate change. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of the ecological, social, cultural, economic, governance, and policy dimensions of fisheries management. The candidate will be expected to develop innovative management strategies and policy options that ensure the sustainability of fisheries and the benefits they provide to local communities. This position will also involve collaboration with other departments and programs at UHM, including the Oceanography Department and the Sea Grant College Program, to create a new accredited graduate degree in fisheries science that meets the needs of Hawai‘i and the broader Pacific region. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching approximately three courses per year at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, focusing on decision analysis, stock assessment, and coastal management and policy. They will also contribute to the development of the graduate degree program in fisheries science and management, actively participate in advising and mentoring students, and develop a globally recognized research program that is externally funded and focused on sustainability and resiliency in coastal fisheries management. The candidate will be expected to supervise student research and provide service to the department, college, university, and the broader community.

Responsibilities
• Develop and teach approximately three courses per year relevant to the NREM program at the undergraduate and graduate level.

• Contribute to the development of a graduate degree program in fisheries science and management.

• Actively participate in undergraduate and graduate advising, mentoring, and student recruitment.

• Develop and sustain a globally recognized, externally funded research program related to coastal fisheries management and policy.

• Supervise and mentor NREM graduate and undergraduate student research.
,
• Provide service to the department, college, university, profession, and the broader community.

Requirements
• A doctorate from an accredited college or university in decision analysis, ecology, fisheries science, economics, environmental science, political science, conservation social science, or related discipline.

• Demonstrated ability to develop and instruct high-quality courses relevant to coastal fisheries management and decision-making.

• Demonstrated capability to conduct high-quality applied research as evidenced by a strong record of research productivity including peer-reviewed publications.

• Demonstrated scholarly achievement and collaborations.
,
• Ability to engage successfully in a multicultural and multi-ethnic environment.
