Job Description
Burrtec Waste is seeking an Assistant Division Manager in San Bernardino, CA, to support daily operations of the hauling division. Responsibilities include overseeing operational performance, safety compliance, fleet coordination, and customer service. The role involves collaborating with various teams to enhance efficiency, monitor performance indicators, and assist with employee development. The position emphasizes a strong safety culture and effective communication with municipal partners and regulatory agencies.
Burrtec is a well-established refuse and recycling collection company serving over fifteen municipalities throughout Southern California and employing over 1900 full-time employees. Burrtec continues to grow through company acquisitions and successful bid proposals. Position Summary
The Assistant Division Manager supports the Division Manager in overseeing the daily operations and administrative functions of the hauling division. This role assists with operational performance, safety compliance, fleet coordination, customer service, and workforce development to ensure efficient and reliable service delivery. Working collaboratively with operations supervisors, dispatch, maintenance, customer service, and administrative teams, the Assistant Division Manager helps maintain operational efficiency and regulatory compliance across the division.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Support the Division Manager in overseeing daily hauling operations, including route performance, fleet utilization, service reliability, and operational productivity.Assist in ensuring routes are completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with company standards and municipal service agreements.Work collaboratively with operations supervisors, dispatch, and maintenance teams to resolve operational issues and improve service delivery.Assist with route optimization, operational planning, and productivity initiatives to improve efficiency and cost control.Monitor operational performance indicators and identify opportunities to improve service quality, productivity, and operational performance.Support the Division Manager in onboarding, coaching, and developing supervisors, drivers, and frontline employees while promoting a culture of teamwork, accountability, and servant leadership.Assist in evaluating employee performance and provide input regarding disciplinary actions, promotions, compensation adjustments, and other personnel decisions.May supervise operations supervisors, dispatch personnel, or administrative staff as assigned by the Division Manager.Promote a strong safety culture and assist in ensuring compliance with all company safety policies and applicable federal, state, and local regulations including DOT and OSHA requirements.Work with safety personnel to review safety performance metrics, investigate incidents, and implement corrective actions.Assist the Division Manager in monitoring operational and administrative costs, budgeting activities, and operational performance metrics including route productivity, overtime usage, fleet utilization, and disposal costs.Support relationships with municipal partners, regulatory agencies, and customers, and assist in resolving service concerns or operational issues in a timely and professional manner.Assist in coordinating operations between departments including dispatch, maintenance, customer service, and administrative teams to ensure efficient service delivery and appropriate staffing levels.Serve as acting operational leadership support when the Division Manager is unavailable and demonstrate readiness to assume expanded operational responsibilities as part of Burrtec’s leadership succession planning program.Perform other duties as assigned to support divisional operations and business needs.
Qualifications
4–7 years of progressive leadership experience in transportation, logistics, operations management, or a related field.Experience in the solid waste, recycling, transportation, or environmental services industry strongly preferred.Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, Logistics, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.Demonstrated ability to lead teams, coordinate operations, and solve complex operational challenges.Bilingual Spanish preferred.Valid California Driver’s License required.Ability to travel between company facilities or operational locations as business needs require.

Physical Requirement/Working Conditions
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours per day.Manual dexterity and vision sufficient to operate a computer and standard office equipment.Hearing sufficient to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.Ability to travel between company facilities and operational locations as business needs require.Operational environments may include exposure to moving vehicles, heavy equipment, outdoor weather conditions, dust, noise, and odors commonly associated with waste hauling operations.Must be able to safely walk through operational areas, including uneven surfaces, active vehicle traffic areas, and industrial work environments.Employees entering operational areas must comply with all company safety policies and may be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Yes, may directly supervise operations supervisors, dispatch personnel, administrative staff, or other employees assigned by the Division Manager.
