Job Description

Yale University seeks an Assistant Director for its Office of Sustainability in New Haven, CT. The role focuses on leading sustainability initiatives, fostering a culture of sustainability, and managing engagement programs. Responsibilities include developing strategies for staff involvement, overseeing sustainability surveys, and reporting on program outcomes. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree, relevant experience, and strong communication and project management skills. This is an on-site position.

Position Focus:

The Assistant Director supports the Office of Sustainability in leading university sustainability initiatives, transparent progress reporting, and fostering a sustainability culture on campus and beyond. Responsibilities include driving data-driven decision making, effective communication, and engagement across the Yale community.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in sustainability, excellent communication, project management, systems thinking, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.

Key responsibilities include:
• Developing strategies to enhance staff involvement in sustainability efforts aligned with university goals.
• Managing biennial Sustainability and Transportation Surveys to inform programs and communications.
• Creating and deploying staff engagement initiatives, such as a Sustainability Leaders program.
• Supporting departments with sustainability action plans and integrating sustainability into daily operations.
• Implementing sustainable transportation programs and resources for staff.
• Communicating about engagement programs through various channels and fostering a culture of sustainability.
• Tracking and reporting on program activities, metrics, and outcomes.
• Staying informed on best practices and trends in sustainability and transportation.
• Collaborating with the Office of Sustainability team and supporting cross-departmental projects.
• Overseeing Yale’s sustainability reporting and benchmarking submissions.Program Oversight:

Provides leadership, strategic development, community partnership cultivation, and program evaluation. Manages grants, budgets, staffing, and internal systems. Oversees communication strategies and contributes to website content. Performs additional duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination.
Required

Skills and Abilities:
• Proven sustainability expertise, strategic thinking, and understanding of university operations.
• Excellent oral and written communication, including report writing and data visualization.
• Experience in behavior change, campaigns, or related fields.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and project management skills; ability to work independently and in teams.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with ArcGIS, Power

BI, and transportation systems preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree and eight years of related experience preferred.
