Job Title: Archaeology Field Director

Mission for position:

Under indirect supervision, oversees, coordinates, and directs multiple archaeological crews during archaeological surveys and excavation projects. Provides technical guidance in areas of specialized expertise. Participates in planning and coordinating archaeological projects, including budget development and research design. Writes and co-authors technical reports for publication.

Location: Near Cheyenne, WY - Projected Start Date April 2025

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Oversees and directs multiple archaeological field crews in locating, collecting, recording, and interpreting data for survey and excavation projects.

2. Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.

3. Coordinates on-site logistics for archaeological projects and resolves problems to ensure the timely, safe, and effective completion of project objectives.

4. Ensures the application of safe work practices by crew members during survey/excavation projects.

5. Provides functional guidance and leadership to technical staff in areas of specialty, such as faunal, lithic, and/or ceramic analysis.

6. Assists with project planning activities, to include identifying appropriate equipment, resources and personnel needed, project budgets, and research design.

7. Performs direct research and analysis in one or more areas of archaeological specialty.

8. Writes or co-authors archaeological survey, excavation, and analysis reports for publication.

9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
• Education - Bachelors Degree in Archaeology or equivalent discipline.
• Experience - 3 years of supervisory field experience
• Permitted to conduct non-collection survey by the stage or agency with jurisdiction. Ideally, the candidate would be permittable by the BLM - High Desert and/or High Plains District offices and USFS - Medicine Bow NF
