ESA is looking to hire an Air Quality and Noise Analyst. Our ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience, but we will also consider candidates who meet the qualifications with 2 - 7 years of relevant experience to support a wide range of both public and private clients. A preference will be given to individuals with expertise using leading computing technology to solve complex air quality problems and a natural curiosity that leads to innovative solutions. The candidate should have a working knowledge of scientific programming approaches, be familiar with geographic information systems, and have a background in meteorology, chemistry, civil and environmental engineering, environmental science, physics, or a related field. Candidates will be hired at a position commensurate with their experience.

Who You Are

You are an effective team member who is knowledgeable of air quality, greenhouse gas, energy, and/or noise analyses and air quality and greenhouse gas emissions and/or noise modeling.

You hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemistry, meteorology, physics, urban planning, civil and environmental engineering, environmental science; or you have a related degree and directly relevant qualifications. You have 5+ years of experience in environmental consulting or a closely related field. We will also consider candidates who meet the qualifications with 2 - 7 years of experience.

Successful candidates will have working knowledge of or experience with CEQA/NEPA impact assessment, utilizing air quality models such as AERMOD, CalEEMod, OFFROAD, EMFAC, AERSCREEN, MOVES and HARP and/or noise modeling software such as FHWA TNM, FHWA RCNM, and CadnaA and SoundPlan. Successful candidates will be experienced in Microsoft Office software such as: Word and Excel (including Excel formulas and pivot tables). Knowledge of current regulations and standards for air quality, greenhouse gas, and noise, and CEQA Guidelines is preferred.

You are an experienced technical writer, can work within allotted budgets and schedules, and have strong organizational capabilities and problem-solving skills. You can work collaboratively with clients and interdisciplinary teams to deliver projects on time and within budget in a fast-paced work environment.

You can incorporate constructive feedback on work products to further your own career development and growth and to learn new skills with the goal of delivering high-quality work products.

You enjoy fieldwork and can walk long distances carrying a backpack; and are able to lift at least 50 pounds. You are confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments. Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in natural environments. You may be exposed to inclement weather and uncomfortable working conditions. Some night and/or weekend work may be required.

What You Will Do for ESA

You will support the Southern California Air Quality and Noise Team within the Community Development Department with the preparation of air quality, greenhouse gas, energy, and/or noise analyses under CEQA and NEPA as well as for stand-alone studies and air permitting.

You will perform technical studies such as air quality and greenhouse gas analyses, noise analyses, health risk assessments, emissions modeling, air quality dispersion modeling, noise modeling, and/or groundborne vibration modeling. You will also conduct field monitoring for air quality, noise, and/or groundborne vibration. In general, the frequency of field monitoring work may vary from approximately once per month to once per week, based on project needs. You can work independently on multiple projects with minimal supervision.

You will consistently demonstrate your strong technical writing skills and attentive listening skills. You will prepare or assist with identifying data needs for projects, setting up modeling assumptions and modeling runs for review by the project manager or task manager, contributing to report writing, and taking initiative to discuss problems and potential solutions with the project manager or task manager.You will participate in weekly employee meetings with the Southern California Air Quality and Noise Team to review assignments, upcoming deadlines, and development/training opportunities.

You will serve as an air quality and/or noise specialist, preparing and/or managing environmental analyses under the supervision of a senior team member. You will produce technical work and written products that are clear, concise, and well supported.

You may also provide support to other staff, including providing quality assurance/quality control review of work products for accuracy and clarity and providing constructive feedback.

You will thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment and be able to manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines while working in a team or independently.

The position is for hybrid work from any of our Southern California offices (Los Angeles, Pasadena, Thousand Oaks, Irvine, San Diego).

ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position the range is $69,764 – $101,158 annually based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details. If hired at a more advanced level, the position range is $81,042 – $121,563 annually based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details.Actual compensation is determined by many factors including an individual’s related experience, education, skills, and the city where the applicant lives.
