Overview
The Rangeland-Wildlife Extension lab in the Wildland Resources Department at Utah State University (USU) is seeking applicants for wildlife technicians for our 2025 field season to work on a research project in Central Utah studying sage-grouse, sagebrush obligate passerines, and potentially other sagebrush-associated wildlife. The overarching theme of this project is the response of the above species of concern to sagebrush conservation and management actions. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience with multiple species and to work on a project that directly benefits threatened wildlife in a spectacular landscape. Technicians will be advised by the PhD student overseeing the project. Work will start in late April and continue through late August. Technicians are not required to be available for the entire field season although they are expected to be full-time from ~ May 15th - July 31st. Fieldwork will take place on Parker Mountain, a 9,000ft sagebrush plateau, home to one of Utah's largest sage-grouse populations, near Capital Reef National Park . Housing during the field season will be provided most likely in Loa or Bicknell Utah. Housing will include shared bunk-style rooms and a mobile travel trailer. Field trucks, UTVs, and ATVs will be provided.

Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Audio and visual songbird point count surveys
• Trapping sage-grouse at night and attaching GPS radio transmitters
• Sage-grouse brood surveys using pointing dogs
• Radio-telemetry of sage-grouse hens and chicks
• Operating ATVs and 4x4 vehicles
• Hiking long distances over rugged terrain, high elevations, and in variable weather conditions
• Potential for other wildlife surveys
Both teamwork and the ability to work independently will be needed. It is essential that applicants can work and live side-by-side with co-workers, as well as work independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• Passion for wildlife biology and conservation
• Valid Driver's License to perform essential job functions
• Demonstrated communication skills in English (written and oral)
• Demonstrated ability to drive long distances for field work, use 4-wheel-drive vehicles, and use UTV/ATVs safely
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with terrestrial ecology and fieldwork.
• Experience working in remote areas independently
• Experience with audio and visual bird identification. Preference will be given to applicants possessing these skills, as songbird point counts will be a large component of field work.
• Experience with wildlife capture and handling
• Working dog ownership/handling experience
• A partial or completed degree in Wildlife, Biology, Botany, or Rangeland Science
