The Hawaiʻi Wildlife Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to protect, conserve, and aid in the recovery of Hawai‘i’s native wildlife through hands–on treatment, research, training, science education and cultural programs. We are a federally and state permitted wildlife rehabilitation center with operations throughout the state of Hawaiʻi and provide quality and humane care for over 70 different species and subspecies of native birds and the Hawaiian hoary bat.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager is responsible for managing native Hawaiian wildlife response, stabilization and animal care operations at the main Hawaiʻi Wildlife Center located on Hawaiʻi Island and ensure that the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Center’s high standards for animal welfare are met through appropriate wildlife care practices and husbandry. The Manager represents the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Center and its mission and values during training, educational and cultural programs.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager reports directly to the Director of Wildlife Rehabilitation and Veterinary Medicine (DWRVM). Candidates must be able to professionally manage the main facility operations and assist the satellite facilities (Oʻahu, Lānaʻi) in coordination with the DWRVM, wildlife agencies and assisting veterinary clinics. Candidates should possess the ability to act decisively regarding changing cases and situations and further develop HWC protocols in consultation with the DWRVM. Candidates must have experience in seabird rehabilitation and be able to handle the rigors of seabird fallout season, when 400-800 birds come through the HWC Oʻahu Seabird Aid Program and 40-80 birds may need to be evaluated daily during the peak fallout. Keen interest in wildlife conservation issues is a must.

SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

Oversee and direct the rehabilitation of patients using protocols approved by the DWRVM

Evaluate, stabilize and initiate treatment of native birds and bats dropped off by the public or transferred from other islands.

Train, manage and direct wildlife technicians and assistants to provide high quality, humane and timely rehabilitation of native Hawaiian species

Coordinate bird rescues and transports using our wheels for wildlife volunteers, and interisland transports using airlines or volunteer pilots

Manage the animal care staff schedule and ensure adequate daily staff coverage

Instruct interns and veterinary students on wildlife rehabilitation

Inspect enclosures and aviaries for wear and tear and perform and direct simple repairs and notify the DWRVM of major repairs needed

Maintain clean sanitary facilities, aviaries and conditioning pools

Follow good human and animal safety and biosecurity practices

Recruit, oversee and manage on-site volunteers and transport volunteers

Keep track of in-kind donations made to the Kapaau Facility

Assist the DWRVM in intern application review and selection

Assist the DWRVM in hiring and interviewing for open rehabilitation positions

Oversee and approve timesheets for hourly employees

Coordinate and work together with the HWC Oahu Satellite Clinic

Assist the veterinarian with procedures, surgery and anesthesia

Send notifications to state and federal wildlife agencies about any threatened or endangered species

Maintain current and accurate daily animal care health records

Maintain inventory of supplies and feed and oversee the purchasing of animal diets and rehabilitation supplies within budget and storage space guidelines.

Remain current on rehabilitation methods and captive care of wildlife through literature review, courses, meetings and conferences as schedule permits

Provide assistance and education to the public over the phone and in person.

Represent HWC at public events to share about the organization’s mission and work.

Other duties as required or assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university, or equivalent experience.

Must have a minimum of three years experience working full time in a wildlife rehabilitation center or equivalent animal care facility

Must have at least one year of supervisory experience

Must have considerable knowledge of wildlife rehabilitation, natural history and have experience working with various wild species such seabirds, raptors, waterfowl, passerines and bats

Must be able to make euthanasia decisions and perform euthanasia procedures

Must have knowledge and experience performing lab work, physical exams, taking blood, giving intravenous and subcutaneous fluids, and initiating treatment.

Must have or be able to obtain a valid drivers license and have no record of major or repeated minor traffic offenses.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds of weight

Must be able to multitask and handle the rigors of emergency wildlife response (eg. Seabird fallout)

Must be legally entitled to work in the USA

Familiarity with Wildlife Rehabilitation Medical Database (WRMD) or other electronic medical records systems

Preferred: Certified Wildlife Rehabilitator (CWR) certification

Preferred: Veterinary Technician experience

Preferred: skills and experience with oiled wildlife protocols and management, including federal/state requirements, and training. Must also have or be able to obtain 24hr HAZWOPER Training

Preferred: experience with seabird pools and regular maintenance

Able to pass background check and drug testing, be able to work with school children in education programs/events

Willing to work during weekends and have a set schedule set based on the needs of the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Center and patient cases

Must abide by the NWRA Wildlife Rehabilitators code of ethics and HWC Employment Manual at all times.

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $46,000-$50,000 plus benefits and commensurate with experience.

Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, and prescription start after 1-month of employment; and 10-vacation days annually after passing 6-months probationary period; 401k retirement plan.
