About the position
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is dedicated to conserving the state's wildlife resources and their habitats while providing programs and opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The Wildlife Conservation Technician I position is part of the Land and Water Access Division, based at the Hertford Depot in Perquimans County, NC. This role involves conducting fish and wildlife habitat management, research, surveys, and infrastructure management on state-owned lands and waterways. The technician will work on various project objectives aimed at restoring and improving habitats for endangered and game species, providing hunting opportunities, managing wildlife openings, creating early successional habitats, and restoring altered ecosystems. Additionally, the technician will support research and survey efforts that aid in the long-term management and identification of species and habitats, perform prescribed burning, and maintain and renovate boating access areas and public fishing areas. Infrastructure-related duties include the maintenance of roads, dikes, trails, game land boundaries, docks, piers, navigation aids, and parking areas. The position requires operating heavy equipment such as farm tractors, crawler tractors, mowers, and trucks. The work schedule is typically 40 hours per week, with specific times set by the manager, and may require night work and overnight travel on occasion. The technician may also be required to work some weekends and holidays, depending on operational needs. This position is crucial for ensuring the effective management and conservation of North Carolina's wildlife resources, contributing to the agency's mission of providing sustainable outdoor recreational opportunities for the public.
Responsibilities

Requirements
• Associate Degree in Wildlife or Fisheries Management or Construction Management from an accredited institution.

• Two years of experience in wildlife or fisheries resource management or heavy equipment operation.

• Knowledge of wildlife management, fish management, wildlife habitats, land management, and agricultural practices.

• Experience operating and maintaining a variety of equipment and tools, including agricultural machinery and power tools.

• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license within 90 days of hire.

• Ability to operate GPS units and associated GIS software.
