Job Description

The Wildlife Biology Intern position at the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex offers a full-time internship from May 1 to August 30, 2025, in Newport, OR. Interns will work with wildlife biologists to collect data on seabird productivity, train volunteers, and assist in habitat restoration. Applicants should have relevant education, be under 31, and possess a valid driver's license. A monthly stipend and lodging are provided.
Description

The Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex in partnership with Shoreline Education for Awareness provides full-time (40-hours/week) PLC internships. Interns gain hands-on experience alongside park rangers, wildlife biologists and refuge managers.

Wildlife Biology Intern: Works with a small team to collect data on nesting seabird productivity and other biological tasks along the Oregon Coast.

This position is stationed in Newport, OR. May 1, 2025- Aug 30, 2025.

Duties include:
• Collect productivity data for nesting black oystercatcher, cormorants and murres by conducting on shore nesting observations of nearshore rocks and islands.
• Organize, train, and schedule a small team of volunteers to assist in productivity counts.
• Conduct nesting seabird counts on aerial photographs using GIS software.
• Collect and enter field data using Microsoft excel, Survey123, FieldMaps, and similar software.
• Assist refuge staff and volunteers in a variety of field work including invasive plant and habitat restoration projects.

Requirements:
• B.Sc. preferred or some undergrad coursework in biology, natural resources, park management or related field required.
• U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident under age 31
• Valid state driver’s license
• Must be able to work independently and in groups
• Must have good observational and communication skills
• Schedule flexibility, including weekend, holidays and morning/evening shifts
