Job Description
The Wickecheoke Creek Land Conservation Internship at New Jersey Conservation Foundation involves evaluating preserve infrastructure and managing natural resources. Interns will utilize mapping software, conduct field observations, and engage in trail maintenance and habitat restoration. Candidates should be pursuing degrees in biology, environmental science, or related fields and must be comfortable working outdoors. The position is part-time from July to September 2025, requiring independent transportation.
Company Description: New Jersey Conservation Foundation is a non-profit organization that preserves open space and farmland throughout New Jersey. We do this by educating landowners about conservation options to preserve properties, managing over 25,000 acres of preserved land, promoting advocacy and policy issues with state agencies, and state and federal lawmakers, engaging the public and other conservation organizations in educational activities, and efficiently managing a large conservation nonprofit. To learn more, visit www.njconservaton.org.
Internship Description: At NJ Conservation’s Wickecheoke Creek Preserve, the intern will work to evaluate existing preserve infrastructure through a lens of effective natural resource management and public access. Utilizing mapping software and in-field observations, the intern will identify existing infrastructure within the preserve, including structures like bird boxes, trail kiosks, informational signs, and benches. Using the data collected in the field, they will then develop a report summarizing current conditions and future management recommendations. The intern will also be able to engage in a variety of ongoing projects within the stewardship department, including trail maintenance, habitat restoration, and overall preserve management.
Internship Requirements: Intern candidates should be pursuing a degree in the fields of biology, environmental science or related fields, or pursuing a different field of study with an interest in a public lands management career. This position will take place primarily outdoors, so candidates should be comfortable in an outdoor setting in various weather conditions. Candidates must have the ability to hike off-trail through rough terrain and must be comfortable navigating and working alone. Hand and power tools may be used as a part of the work. Climbing a small ladder (up to 4’) may be required at times. Independent transportation is required.
Internship activities may include:
● Mapping: Utilize mapping software and in-field observation to record the location and condition of important preserve infrastructure. Develop a report using collected observation records, including location information, infrastructure condition, and future management recommendations. The report should take into consideration elements such as impacts to natural resources and use of infrastructure by the public.
● Public Access: Evaluate current trail conditions, assist with maintenance of existing trails and trail improvements and install boundary markers as needed.
● Other Tasks: Other activities that the intern may participate in include monitoring general property use, and management of agricultural lands. The intern will learn important skills such as how to read property surveys, the basics of GIS tracking and mapping, and how to navigate off-trail in remote areas. Depending upon availability, the intern will also have the opportunity to learn about other aspects of NJ Conservation’s work, by talking to and learning from other staff members and participating in staff meetings.
Number of Openings: one (1)
Commitment: This position will be part-time, July to September 2025, with a 100 hour total time commitment. Schedule is flexible and will be developed with the intern’s supervisor.
Stipend: $2,000
To Apply: Submit cover letter, resume, and three references to Amy Hansen, Policy Manager at amy@njconservation.org with “Wickecheoke Creek Land Conservation Internship” in the subject line by Monday, June 23, 2025. The position will remain open until filled. Please no calls.
