About the position

The Water Quality Permitting Scientist position focuses on ensuring compliance with water quality standards in Montana, specifically related to coal mining operations. This role involves performing scientific analyses and writing permits for wastewater discharges, ensuring that they meet state and federal regulations to protect public health and the aquatic environment.

Responsibilities
• Perform scientific and technical analyses related to water quality programs.

• Write individual permits for Western Alkaline Coal mining facilities in Montana.

• Administer general and individual permit writing duties as needed.

• Analyze and interpret environmental data to inform permit requirements.

• Review and implement state and federal statutes, rules, and policies regarding water quality.

• Act as a liaison between diverse stakeholders, including municipalities and industries.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in physical, earth, or life sciences.

• Two years of directly related experience in environmental science or a similar field.

• Experience analyzing and interpreting environmental data.

• Experience reviewing specifications and processes at public works and industrial facilities, especially mining facilities.

• Ability to write technical documents for a general audience.
