Job Description

The Department of Environmental Studies at Davidson College invites applications for a one-year position at the Visiting Assistant Professor level, with a start date of July 1, 2025. The primary teaching responsibility will be our introductory Environmental Science course, plus other courses in the professor's area of expertise. The ideal candidate will demonstrate potential for excellence in interdisciplinary undergraduate education, will possess expertise in an area of environmental natural science, and will convey expertise in quantitative, qualitative, and/or GIS methods through their teaching and scholarship. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to teaching a diverse undergraduate population and continuing scholarly activity. We welcome candidates with doctoral degrees conferred by July 2025 in a variety of fields related to environmental science including hydrology, climate science, ecology, urban environments, energy, air chemistry, environmental health, geochemistry, and natural hazards., or other related programs. Candidates who can deepen our students' understanding of human-environment interactions are especially appreciated. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Environmental Science, Earth Science, or related discipline/interdisciplinary program by July 1, 2025.

The annual course load is five courses, where lab courses count as two courses. Courses taught will include an introductory Environmental Science lab course plus additional mid-and upper-level courses in the candidate's areas of expertise. Each senior in the department completes a mandatory capstone research project, so we seek a colleague with a desire to mentor undergraduate research.

Applications must be submitted online at https://employment.davidson.edu. The position is open until filled, with review of applications beginning April 25, 2025. Applications must include (1) a concise cover letter with discrete sections describing the candidate's approach to teaching and a brief overview of research, (2) a curriculum vitae that contains contact information for three references, and (3) a statement of the candidate's potential capacity for excellence in teaching, research, and mentorship in a liberal arts context, as well as how their teaching, research, and mentorship can support Davidson's institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion. The statement should include past experience or training in inclusive pedagogy or practices, how the candidate has implemented inclusive pedagogy in past teaching or mentoring (if applicable) to support students of all backgrounds, and how the candidate would contribute to an inclusive learning environment at Davidson College. The initial screening of candidates will be based exclusively on this statement. Reference letters will be requested for selected candidates later in the search process.
