About the position

Help provide a more safe and efficient transportation system as an Urban and Regional Planner! We currently have two vacancies at both the entry and advanced level! This position is headquartered at the Hill Farms State Office Building in Madison, WI. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is dedicated to creating transportation solutions through innovation and exceptional service. The WisDOT Division of Transportation Investment Management (DTIM) conducts long-range, multimodal transportation planning; guides the use of state and federal transportation dollars based upon research and data analysis of the state's transportation systems; manages the project selection process for the state highway rehabilitation and the major highway programs; and administers various local transportation, transit, airport, rail, harbor and other specialized aids programs. Both positions work as key members of a multi-divisional team to apply policy analysis, program evaluation, planning skills, environmental principles, economic development principles, impact assessment, social science research, and fiscal analysis to recommendations affecting the development of multimodal transportation plans. These positions play a key role in analysis of a broad range of complex and major transportation issues, including but not limited to relationships and competing needs between transportation modes, environmental and land use impacts, bicycle and pedestrian mobility needs and impacts, fiscal constraints, and other transportation issues.

Responsibilities
• Assist with administering and managing the Standalone Curb Ramp Improvement Program to ensure compliance with ADA standards.

• Manage day-to-day program questions and operations related to curb ramp improvements.
,
• Oversee annual data collection efforts and reporting through WisDOT's ADA Transition Plan.
,
• Solicit projects for the curb ramp program and manage project changes as needed.
,
• Serve as liaison to multiple Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and Regional Planning Commissions (RPCs).
,
• Ensure that the use of funds for planning needs meet state and federal guidelines.
,
• Provide technical and policy assistance in the development of regional plans.
,
• Support the administration of federal planning funds for multi-modal urban transportation planning activities.
,
• Assist in the management and annual update of the Department's Statewide Transportation Improvement Program.

Requirements
• Experience communicating technical information to a non-technical audience.
,
• Experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access or similar products to document work activities or create work products.
,
• Experience analyzing data.
,
• Experience working on a planning study or interpreting and applying complex laws, rules, or regulations.
,
• Experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to perform activities such as developing and maintaining a geodatabase, creating, and editing maps.

Nice-to-haves
• Experience leading teams to perform tasks such as data collection, technical analysis, and documentation of planning issues.

• Experience with MPOs and RPCs.

• Experience with public involvement for planning activities.
