Job Description
The City of Hillsboro is seeking an Urban Design Intern for a hybrid internship starting June 15, 2026, lasting up to 400 hours. Candidates must reside in Oregon and will assist with urban design projects, data analysis, and graphic support. Compensation varies based on education level. Ideal candidates are enrolled in a related program and possess strong communication and computer skills. Applications close after 50 submissions or by March 29, 2026.

This internship will have a duration of up to 400 hours. Depending on the needs of the department, the position may follow a hybrid schedule that includes a combination of in-person and remote work. The selected candidate must reside in Oregon by the time of hire.

Compensation — Varies based on education level
Enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in a college or university: $19.57/hour
Enrolled as a junior or senior in a college or university: $21.17/hour
Enrolled in a graduate program: $24.77/hour
What You Will Be Doing
As an Urban Design Intern, you will support a range of planning, urban design, and data/analysis functions that will broaden your knowledge base of Urban Design and Planning within a local government context. This internship offers hands-on experience with urban design initiatives and offers valuable insight into how planning and development decisions are made in a local government setting.
Responsibilities may include:
• Assisting with potential new and ongoing projects including:
• Graphic support and sustainability data analysis for South Hillsboro "Green Data Visualization" Project.
• Graphic support for special projects. EX: Public Noticing graphics or Sign Code diagrams.
• Finalization of Downtown Hillsboro Design Guide.
• Shadowing opportunities for Land Use pre-application meetings, case file reviews and Planning Commission presentations.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is curious, collaborative and interested in learning about planning and urban design in a public sector environment. Successful candidates will:
• Demonstrate strong listening and communication skills.
• Communicate positively and professionally with staff and community members.
• Be able to manage assignments independently while meeting deadlines.
• Show flexibility in taking on a range of assignments and a willingness to learn new skills.
• Have an interest in land use planning, code regulations, Architectural and Urban design, information visualization, and/or process improvement.
Minimum Qualifications :
Must be enrolled in an educational institution (post-secondary) or have graduated within the last 3 months, and interested or studying Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, or closely related field. Level of education and experience needed will vary based on assignment requirements.
Preferred Qualifications and Expectations
• Demonstrates strong computer and graphic skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office. Familiarity with programs such as SketchUp, Revit, Rhino, V-Ray, Enscape, GIS, and Adobe Creative Suite is highly desirable.
• Able to participate in the internship in an in-person or hybrid (in-person and virtual) format. Please note that applications will only be accepted from in-state residents.
• Must be able to attend Hillsboro Human Resource Summer Intern Events in Hillsboro and be willing and able to meet staff off-site at a public location (i.e. coffee shop or site tour) for one-on-one meetings.
• Preference may be given to students currently enrolled at Portland Community College in the Future Connect program.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
Depending on assignment, some positions may require:
• Possession of a valid State Driver's License and safe driving record.
