The Student Conservation Association is seeking a National Historic Trail Participant in Hayneville, AL, to serve as a Park Guide at the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. Responsibilities include staffing the front desk, assisting visitors, operating the bookstore cash register, and conducting individual projects related to the site's history. The position requires good communication skills and a passion for history. It is a full-time role from February 2026 to February 2027.
Individual Placement - National Historic Trail Participant 4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars Hayneville, AL 36040 Position Summary Individuals will serve with the National Park Service at the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. They will serve as a Park Guide working the front desk at either the Montgomery, Lowndes or Selma Interpretive Centers. They will also have individual projects related to the history or themes of the site. Location Hayneville, AL Schedule February 23, 2026 - February 20, 2027 Key Duties and Responsibilities Individuals will staff the front desk of the Interpretive Center, answering visitor questions and phone calls; Individuals will operate the cash register at the bookstore, assisting visitors with sales; Other duties that relate to the history of the site, such as researching backgrounds on foot soldiers; Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing. Marginal Duties Individuals may have to assist visitors with first aid. Required Qualifications Enjoy working with people of diverse backgrounds Like the study of history, historical, natural or cultural resources Flexible. This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority. Preferred Qualifications Ability to learn Customer service skills Ability to build good public speaking skills Ability to learn the history of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail and share this knowledge with visitors. Hours 20 per week Living Accommodations Housing is not available for this position. Compensation Living allowance - $300/week Commuting allowance $25.00/week All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
