Job Description

The City of Marathon is seeking a Turtle Nest Surveyor for Sombrero Beach and Coco Plum Beach during turtle nesting season from April 15 to October 31. This part-time role involves daily beach patrols to protect turtle nests, reporting to the Planning Department, and documenting turtle activities. Applicants must have a valid Florida driver's license, be at least 18 years old, and complete a permitting class. The position pays $15 per hour.
Summary:

During turtle nesting season, April 15 through October 31, a daily beach patrol must walk the City’s two beaches to ensure no nests will be disturbed by daily raking.

Job status: Open and accepting applications.

Category: Part Time 1-2 days per week during nesting season.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Must be permitted by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission administered through Save-A-Turtle. Attendance of a mandatory permitting class. Classes are virtual: Saturday. April 12, 2025, 9:00 AM-1:00 PM. Contact volunteer@save-a-turtle.org.

Both City beaches must be walked daily at the first light of day.

Reports to the Planning Department daily to coordinate with beach raker.

Fill out reports when there is a nest or a crawl.

Inventory nests and document all turtle activities.

Coordinate with the Planning Department on the submittal of the end of season reports.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk for moderate periods; use hands to manipulate objects, tools, or write. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and dig.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary: $15.00 per hour.

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Possession of a valid State of Florida drivers license. Must be 18 years of age or older.
