Trash Operator III

The City of Charleston is hiring a Trash Operator III responsible for operating collection vehicles, supervising drivers, and ensuring safe trash collection on assigned routes. Candidates should have an Associate’s degree and two years of related experience, along with a valid SC Commercial Driver’s License. The position offers an annual salary of $53,001 - $56,725.50 and includes a $3,000 bonus. This is a full-time role with paid time off.
Annual Salary: $53,001.00 - $56,725.50 Hourly: $27.18 - $29.09 Department: Environmental Services, Public Service Division: Yard Waste/Bulk FLSA: Non-Exempt Job Description: $3,000 BONUS $1,500 ON FIRST CHECK AND $1,500 AFTER 120-DAYS OF EMPLOYMENT This role will work under the direction of the Route Supervisor, and you will be responsible for: operating assigned equipment, supervising an assigned team of drivers, and collecting trash on an assigned route. Examples of Duties: Coordinates team activities in order to ensure proper completion of collection routes. Drives and operates an assigned collection vehicle in a safe manner on an assigned route for the collection of refuse. Learns all routes and interprets route maps. Places refuse or debris in the collection vehicle by use of claw tractor. Uses a broom, shovel, or pitchfork, or other safe means to pick up loose or spilled garbage or trash. Completes pre- and post- route checks of assigned vehicle and route reports on a daily basis. Maintains assigned safety equipment and uses it properly at all times. Assesses and reports any unexpected mechanical problems to prevent further vehicle damage and/or unsafe operation. Reports environmental code violations to supervisor. Trains subordinates. Assists Route Supervisors with employee evaluations and disciplines, making recommendations where appropriate. Assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Route Supervisor as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
