About the position

The Telecom Electronic Technician II position at BNSF Railway in Kansas City, KS, is a critical role that involves the installation, repair, and maintenance of telecommunications equipment essential for the operation of the railroad. This includes working with various systems such as radios, digital microwave equipment, and radio frequency data links. The technician will be responsible for ensuring that all telecommunications devices are functioning correctly to support the safe and efficient movement of freight across the extensive BNSF rail network, which spans 28 western states and serves three Canadian provinces. In this role, the technician will perform a variety of technical duties, including the installation, assembly, repair, adjustment, testing, and maintenance of telecommunications systems. This encompasses both wired and wireless systems, microwave technologies, automatic equipment identification systems, IP networks, VoIP, and various communication devices. The technician will also be tasked with troubleshooting issues to the component level, working closely with the IT help desk to resolve trouble tickets and work orders for both internal and external customers. Recordkeeping is another essential aspect of this position, as the technician will need to document repairs in the Repair Tracking System and maintain a log history of the Train Control System as required. The role requires proficiency in using various types of test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators, to troubleshoot and repair telecommunications devices. Additionally, the technician must be able to read and interpret electronic circuit schematics to effectively troubleshoot and repair telecommunication devices. The working conditions for this position can be challenging, as the technician will be exposed to extreme weather conditions, loud noises, and fumes, and will work around heavy and moving machinery. The position is full-time, requiring six days of work per week, including on-call duties, overtime, and the possibility of working nights, weekends, and holidays. Travel is moderate, with the expectation of working within the assigned seniority region, sometimes for extended periods. Responsibilities
• Install, repair and maintain all telecommunications equipment including radios, digital microwave, and radio frequency data link equipment.

• Troubleshoot telecommunications equipment to the component level and resolve issues with the IT help desk.

• Record repairs in the Repair Tracking System and provide log history of the Train Control System as needed.

• Configure and use various types of test equipment to troubleshoot and repair telecommunications devices.

• Read and interpret electronic circuit schematics for troubleshooting telecommunication devices.
,
• Perform inspection, calibration, alignment, and modification of circuits and telecommunications devices.
,
• Configure devices using various platforms and communication protocols such as Windows, Linux, IP, RS232, and USB.

• Perform advanced soldering of through-hole and surface mount devices.

Requirements
• At least 18 years of age by the anticipated start date.

• Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.

• Able to work safely in extreme weather conditions and safety-sensitive environments.

• Able to work full-time hours including on-call shifts, overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Able to read, write, and communicate in English.

• Able to work indoors primarily at a workbench or installation garage.

• Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

• Able to visually distinguish colors: red, blue, green, yellow.

• Possess a valid state-issued driver's license.

• Experience in soldering work.

• Able to read and understand electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic diagrams and schematics.

• Minimum of 2 years of verifiable electronics experience or an Associate's Degree in Electronics or a Vocational Certificate in Electronics Technology.

• Able to use hands and hand tools for various activities.

• Able to climb on/off equipment and occasionally work on top of locomotives.
,
• Able to bend, walk, stand, and sit occasionally with breaks.
,
• Follow safety policies and procedures and wear required personal protective equipment.

• Able to troubleshoot electronics circuits to the circuit board and component level.

• Must successfully complete company-administered Fall Protection Training.

• Able to pass the Electronic Technician II Qualification Test with a score greater than 80%.
