Sustainable building architect

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada is seeking a Sustainable Building Architect to develop and maintain software solutions for the TechInsights platform. This on-site role in Courtright, ON involves building custom internal tools using Retool, collaborating with teams to refine requirements, and mentoring junior developers. THE OPPORTUNITY : As a Retool Software Developer at TechInsights, you will be at the forefront of creating and maintaining software solutions that drive our platform forward.

Reporting to the Agile Development Manager (ADM), you will leverage Retool to rapidly build custom internal tools and software applications that solve complex problems and meet customer needs.

You will work closely with engineers, technical product managers, and operations teams to refine business requirements, address design gaps, and ensure seamless system integration.

You will take ownership of your code from development through testing and deployment, using Retool as a key tool for building internal applications and streamlining workflows.

In addition to developing robust software, you will mentor junior developers, contribute to process improvements in our Agile environment, and lead small-to-medium-sized projects.

In this role you will be recognized as a go-to technical expert within your domain.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
• Develop, Implement, and Maintain Software: Leverage Retool to build custom internal applications and tools that meet the functional and non-functional needs of the business.
• Collaborate with Product Owners to define and refine requirements for software tools and applications.
• Fully understand engineering technical design specifications, ensuring solutions are aligned with system integration and feasibility.
• Write and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests to ensure reliable software solutions.
• Actively engage in design and code reviews to maintain high-quality standards.
• Document implementations and solutions clearly and concisely for future development.
• Conduct automated and manual testing of your code, ensuring quality throughout the development lifecycle.
• Collaborate with internal users to perform user acceptance testing, address defects, and make necessary adjustments.
• Manage the deployment of software applications, ensuring timely releases and effective monitoring of software-related issues.
• Work within schedules to release software to customers, promptly addressing any software issues post-release.
• Apply patches, updates, and bug fixes to ensure the stability and functionality of deployed software.
• Assist in triaging reported issues and correcting defects promptly.
• Act as a key point of contact for internal users, providing training and guidance on tools built with Retool and other custom applications.
• Collaborate with internal teams to provide recommendations on platform enhancements, tech stack improvements, and strategic software implementations.
WHO YOU ARE
• Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Data Science, or other relevant discipline an asset, or equivalent experience.
• Proficiency in Retool or similar low-code / no-code platforms for building and deploying custom internal applications.
• Working knowledge and experience with SQL / noSQL databases (e.g. PostgresQL, DynamoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch).
• Experience with software management tools including Jira, Confluence, or similar.
• Experience with automated testing frameworks and tools to ensure quality code.
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies and best practices for software development.
• Knowledge of software deployment processes, including version control and CI / CD pipelines (e.g., Git).
Nice to have:
• Experience designing and developing microservices.
• Experience developing event-driven design and / or custom ETL solutions (e.g. Spark, Kafka, Kinesis).
• Experience with Test Driven Design.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IAC) - Terraform, CloudFormation, and the Serverless framework.
Problem-Solving:

Strong ability to analyze, debug, and optimize complex systems, especially within internal application frameworks built in Retool.
Collaboration:

Excellent communication skills and a team-oriented mindset, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
Mentorship:

Ability to provide guidance and mentorship to junior developers, helping them grow both technically and professionally.
Self-Motivation:

Independent, proactive, and able to prioritize tasks effectively with minimal supervision.
