This full-time role involves supporting the MBTA in sustainable capital projects, ensuring designs are fossil fuel-free and resilient to climate change. Responsibilities include providing expertise on sustainable design, reviewing project designs, developing standards, tracking sustainability efforts, and coordinating with project managers to utilize appropriate climate data.

Job Intro:
The Manager of Energy Programs, Conservation (Sustainability and Resiliency Design) will assist the MBTA in delivering sustainable and resilient capital projects. Working within the Energy and Environment Department and closely with the Capital Delivery department, the Sustainability and Resiliency Design Professional (SRDP) will assist project managers and other key stakeholders to ensure project designs are fossil fuel free, resilient to the impacts of climate change, and either USGBC LEED or ISI ENVISION certified.
This design professional will also assist the agency in deepening its understanding of the sustainability and resiliency needs through infrastructure assessments.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
• Support The Capital Program and Project Managers to ensure that climate resilience and sustainable design is being folded into the assumptions, risks, design, and accounted for in all capital projects.
• Maintain subject matter expertise on climate resilience and sustainable design for transit systems and serve as internal consultant on this topic to other MBTA departments.
• Attend Project Development Group Meetings, as assigned, for both internal MBTA projects and external / third party TOD projects.
• Review Capital Project designs and give feedback on designs from a climate resilience perspective, as assigned.
• Serve as the MBTA’s Sustainability and Resiliency coordinator for select Capital Projects.
• Help develop program to oversee sustainable and resilient design of all MBTA capital projects.
• Evaluate and Recommend Capital Projects pursue LEED or ENVISION environmental certification and ensure these certifications are prioritized in the design process.
1. Assist with climate resilient and sustainable design at the MBTA:
• Develop new design directives and standards, as needed, to enable more sustainable and resilient design.
• Identify shortcomings of current sustainable and resilient design practices and recommend improvements.
• Create resources for Project managers to digest these directives and better understand how to incorporate them into projects.
2. Track sustainable and resilience design decisions and eventual components of projects:
• Assist Capital Project Managers with tracking Climate Resiliency or Sustainable activities or measures within projects.
• Working with Capital Planning team, develop and maintain a database to track Resiliency or Sustainable activities within projects or project components.
• Help leverage this system to better distribute Capital Funding to more sustainable or resilient projects.
• Track dollars spent on sustainable or resilient design elements.
• Ensure projects deliver on tracked Resiliency or Sustainable elements.
3. Help ensure consistent data is being used in all projects:
• Coordinate with Project Managers to ensure the correct asset information (both asset condition and climate vulnerability rating) is being used to inform the project design.
• Coordinate with Environmental Dept Staff + Capital Project Managers to ensure latest and most-appropriate climate science data is being used at the MBTA for capital projects and used consistently.
• Help standardize energy modeling and design approach at the MBTA.
• Push for Life Cycle Cost Analysis on Capital Projects.
4. Regular field visits:
• Participate in field visits to see infrastructure up-close and learn about MBTA assets and facilities.
• Maintain ROW + RAC and all other relevant safety certifications.
5. Manage Sustainability and Resilience-specific projects:
• Set up and manage any sustainability and resiliency-specific projects.
• Oversee consultants working on these projects and track task order spending.
• Report out on assigned projects.
• Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.
Qualifications:
• Bachelors' degree in energy or environmental engineering, environmental sciences, environmental planning or management, business finance, economics or related field.
• Five (5) years professional experience in energy related project programs including sustainable and resilient design field.
• One (1) year of supervisory, managerial, and/or lead experience.
• Familiarity with wholesale and retail markets for energy and related infrastructure costs.
• Understanding of how both commercial and industrial customers utilize energy and the technologies/techniques available to help them manage and control their energy use.
• Effective organizational, analytical, multi-tasking, time management and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work seamlessly with other departments within the MBTA as well as external groups such as utilities, state agencies, vendors, and other organizations as appropriate.
• Strong computer skills including the following:
Adobe, Outlook, People Soft, CMS, and MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project, and Access).
